He thought they should have better pay and better working conditions.  They were working long hours, doing hard work, couldn't pay for medical care if they were sick/hurt, and they wouldn't get paid if the weather was too bad to work.

Women did not get to learn as much in school as men (they didn't go past 8th grade), they could only have small jobs, they could not be in the government, they could not be doctors or lawyers, they could not own a house if they were married, and they could not VOTE!
