TDQ: Why didn’t Koya stand up for herself? Support your answer with text evidence.

Koya didn’t stand up for herself because she doesn’t like/want to get angry or make other people angry. She thinks if she can just laugh off  uncomfortable situations they will go away. Even at the end of the chapter, she insists to her family that she doesn’t get angry and sees that as a  negative trait. She doesn’t like conflict so she just makes jokes so everyone could laugh and forget about the conflict.

What is the author’s message? Support your answer with text evidence.

The author’s message is that it’s okay to be angry or mad. Everyone feels those feelings and for good reasons. Sometimes situations/ events make us  mad and we need to do stand up for ourselves, confront the people who have made us angry and express our feelings in a healthy way. It’s not good to  bottle in your emotions because it can affect your life such as your sleep. You should confront the people who’ve made you angry in a peaceful way that  gets your point across and holds everyone accountable for their actions and how they made you feel. Koya constantly kept her true feelings bottled up  and used laughter to avoid conflict but when rude fans threaten to ruin her cousin Del’s concert, Koya finally lets out feelings of anger and frustration,  learning that it is okay to show your emotions, not just positive but negatives ones as well.
