Using a word or object that stands for another word or object. The object or word can be seen with the eye or not visible. For example a dove stands for Peace.

A well developed character who demonstrates varied and sometimes contradictory traits. This kind of characters changes in some way over the course of a story.

A literary term referring to how a person, situation, statement, or circumstance is not as it would actually seem. Many times it is the exact opposite of what it appears to be. Its two most common kinds are: verbal and dramatic.

The part of the hero's journey when the future hero refuses to heed the call of duty or obligation. Fear, insecurity, a sense of inadequacy, other reasons work to hold the person in his or her current circumstances.

The part of the hero's life in which he/she realizes that something is wrong, and everything is going to change. Sometimes it is a sign that shows him/her that going out on a journey and doing a required task is necessary.
What is The Call to Adventure?

Might be an external one, such as an evil person or force. It might also be an internal one such as the dark side of the hero- the unexpressed, hidden or suppressed side of his/her nature.

The events and complications begin to resolve themselves. The reader knows what has happened next and if the conflict was resolved or not.

A character that remains primarily the same throughout a story or novel. Events in the story do not alter this character's outlook, personality, motivation, perception, habits, etc.

A narrative technique that allows a writer to present past events during current events, in order to provide background for the current narration. By giving material that occurred prior to the present event, the writer provides the reader with insight into a character's motivation and or background to a conflict.
