Heart muscle protein normally not present in the blood. It is released after cardiac injury or infarction. There are two subtypes which both show cardiac injury. As damage increases more protein are released into the bloodstream. Normal value is <0.03ng/mL

What is troponin?

100

This test indirectly measures the amount of heparin in the blood by measuring its inhibition of factor Xa(a protein involved in blood clotting) activity. Normal range is 0.6-1.5 units/mL

What is Anti-factor Xa?

100

This lab is a protein made by the liver. This protein makes up 40-60% of blood proteins.  It helps with plasma oncotic pressure and prevents third spacing. It can be abnormal in liver or kidney disease or malnutrition. Normal range is 3.5-5.4g/dL

What is albumin?

100

This medication is a reversal agent for vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin.

What is Vitamin K?

100

This lab is a waste product formed by the normal breakdown of muscle cells. Healthy kidneys normally filter this product out. With Unhealthy kidneys or acute kidney injury this value can increase due to poor filtration. Normal value is 0.5-1.2 mg/dL.

What is creatinine?

200

Natriuretic peptide released from the ventricles in response to cardiac stretching secondary to increased blood volume. Elevated in patients with heart failure. Normal value is <100pg/mL

What is B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP)?

200

This lab value measures the amount of time it takes for blood to clot. It specifically looks at prothrombin, a protein produced by the liver that is a factor for blood clotting. Normal range not on anticoagulant is 0.75-1.25; normal range for a client on warfarin is 2-3. Remember when a patient is warfarin we want it to take longer for clotting to decrease risks. a low value indicates higher risk for clotting while a high level means it takes longer to clot.

What is INR?

200

These labs are key digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas. One helps break down carbs and the other helps break down fats. These values can be elevated in pancreatitis.

What are amylase and lipase?

200

This medication is a reversal agent for benzodiazepine medications such as diazepam or lorazepam.

What is flumazenil?

200

These lab values are critical to assess prior to any procedure utilizing contrast dye.

What are BUN/Creatinine?

300

Lab test that measures the amount of fibrin fragments. These fragments are a result of clot degradation. This test is useful in diagnostics of a blood clot or pulmonary embolus. Normal blood value for this lab is <0.50

What is D-Dimer?

300

This lab value is useful to determine recovery in diabetic ketoacidosis. This value looks at the amount of acid is in the blood. This value to closely monitored for resolution of DKA.

What is anion gap?

300

A type of blood test that measures how quickly erythrocytes settle at the bottom of a test tube that contains a blood sample. Normally, red blood cells settle relatively slowly. A faster-than-normal rate may indicate inflammation in the body.

What is erythrocyte sedimentation rate?

300

This medication is a reversal agent for anti-factor Xa medications such as heparin.

What is protamine sulfate?

300

This lab value is a measure of the intrinsic and common pathways of the coagulation cascade. It is useful for monitoring unfractionated heparin therapy.

Normal value not on heparin: 30-40 secs

On heparin: 46-70 secs

What is activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)?

400

Chemical naturally produced by the body to fuel the cells during times of stress. Its presence in elevated quantities is commonly associated with sepsis and severe inflammatory response syndrome.

What is lactate?

400

When this lab value is low it puts patients on digoxin at great risk of toxicity. This lab is important is neuromuscular and cardiac function. It has an inverse relationship with sodium.

What is potassium?

400

This lab value measures the rate of blood flow through the kidneys each minute. When this number is low it means the kidneys are not working as they should. A low number can also occur with acute volume loss. In adults this value should be >90

What is the glomerular filtration rate (GFR)?

400

This reversal agent is used for reversal of acetaminophen overdose.

What is acetylcysteine?

400

These lab values are useful in diagnosis of hypothyroidism. One will be elevated trying to stimulate the thyroid and the other will be low due to low circulating thyroid hormone.

What are:

*TSH &

*T4

500

This is a substance produced by body cells in response to bacterial infections or tissue injury. Can be a useful lab for early detection of sepsis.

What is Pro-Calcitonin

500

This lab value is useful in monitoring control of glucose. It looks at the percentage of hemoglobin proteins are coated with sugar (glycosated).

What is hemoglobin A1C?

500

These lab values look at liver function.

* One is an enzyme found in the liver that helps convert proteins into energy for the liver cells.

* One is an enzyme that helps metabolize amino acids.

*One an enzyme found in the liver and bone and is important for breaking down proteins.

* The last one is a substance produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It passes through the liver and is excreted in stool.

All of these are elevated in liver damage/insufficiency.

What is

*Alanine transaminase (ALT)

*Aspartate transaminase (AST)

*Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)

*Bilirubin

500

This medication can be given in an overdose of beta blockers. This medication can increase HR, heart conduction, and myocardial contractility.

What is glucagon?

500

This diagnosis in pregnant clients is given with one or more of the following critieria:

*hypertension

*low platelet count

*impaired liver function

*Impaired kidney function

*Proteinuria

What is preeclampsia?
