why is it important to plan before starting research?
2022 past paper Q21
Planning for research is important as it allows the researcher to formulate a research proposal, which would include creating a timeline which allows the researcher to effectively manage their time and choosing the most suitable types of data to be collected for the chosen topic. Planning also allows for resources such as time and energy to be managed and selecting appropriate sampling methods to assist in obtaining reliable and valid data.

Discuss the suitability of using questionnaires when conducting research?
2021, Q21
Questionnaires can be distributed to large populations of people and provide a useful amount of quantitative data. They are inexpensive and easy to undertake. Questionnaires can have open and closed questions. They can be completed electronically which makes the collection time faster and easier to manage. Data collection and interpretation can be relatively easy as questions are generally easy to answer (especially closed questions) and do not require to many detailed, long responses. But data collected by means of a questionnaire will only be reliable and valid if the questions included in it have been developed correctly and carefully. Questionnaires require a lot of planning and preparation. The questions can be biased or misleading therefore providing unreliable data.

How could the characteristics of individuals living in a rural and remote location affect a family’s access to services?
2024, Q27
Individuals from rural and remote families may have a lower socioeconomic status during times of drought, flood, or unproductive farming periods. During this time of hardship, finances may be quite low affecting individual’s ability to access high fee health services such as dental, specialist doctor appointments or private health insurance. During such times an individual may neglect to use any of these services due to their expensive nature, possibly leading to further chronic health conditions. A person with a physical disability in a rural or remote area may have a reduced choice of specialised health services and may have to travel long distances to access physiotherapy or rehabilitation. This extended travel time will be expensive and tiresome for the person as it may require specialist transport services or a support person. Answers could include: • Age • Gender • Level of education • Culture • First language spoken
