Which words from Latin List 23 would someone use to describe a grumpy, selfish person?
A grumpy person might be described as**: -egocentric (self-centered); As 'ego' means 'I' and 'centri' means 'center' this word mimics its dictionary definition. A selfish person is also egocentric, and only cares about his well-being. An egocentric person might be oblivious to others' feelings as well as be pusillanimous (remember-'small minded', not in intelligence, but in open-mindedness)to others around him/her, because they are too focused on themselves. -ethnocentrism (racial or cultural prejudice); A person grumpy and selfish will most likely be oblivious to others around him/her, as said previously. Ethnocentrism is the 'doctrine' (ism) of 'center' (centri) 'culture' (ethno). This translates to the dictionary definition, "racial or cultural prejudice". Someone who is ethnocentric is oblivious and selfish to his/her own religion/culture, and may be, again, close-minded to any other possibilities of different beliefs than their own. They are probably 'grumpy' or mad at people that did not believe in the same things as he/she did. pugnacious (combative); A grumpy and selfish person is vile and hostile with his words and actions, and might have some impulse-control issues when it comes to keeping his feelings contained. A pugnacious person is 'full of' (ous) 'fight' (pugn), which means that they are prepared to cause in issue if need be. If someone is grumpy, they might have a trouble with their composure, so they act pugnaciously to others, as a compulsion. For instance, you've probably been mad at someone before and have, in the moment, said or done something that was not necessarily appropriate for the situation. This is exactly what a grumpy, selfish person would do. diatribe (abusive criticism); Again, a person who is grumpy and selfish is not thinking about other people, and might have an impulse to do something inappropriate for the matter. "Diatribe" occurs when that person spouts their mouth and blurts out a profane or spontaneously unacceptable comment or remark, otherwise known as a "caustic" comment. disputatious(argumentative); A disputatious person is someone who is 'full of' (ous) 'away'-ness (dis). This person throws out any opinion other than their own and sparks controversy. For instance, also used in the packet, a reporter or news writer could be 'disputatious' to a celebrity because they deny everything said and bring up touchy topics that annoy the celebrity, and they could be way too officious with them. **-all words used in Latin List 23

Why does 'androgynous' mean what it does?
'Androgynous' (dictionary definition) means "masculine and feminine" because "andro" means "man" and "gyn" means "woman" (ous=full of). This word literally means 'full of man and woman/masculine and feminine."

In a dream, you receive a scathing diatribe from a random person on the street. What crime have you committed to deserve this diatribe?
As a 'diatribe' is "abusive criticism" (dictionary definition), you must have done something very hostile and volatile to deserve such a rant. You must have done something viewed as a mundane crime, like murder, theft, or betrayal to the government.... Think of some other ways that you could have done to lure in a diatribe by a random stranger. :)

Is all great music 'euphonic'?
Considering 'eu' means 'good' and 'phon' means 'sound', the Latin of the word does answer the question, but, technically, it is a matter of opinion if the music is necessarily 'great' and if it is 'good sound' or not.

What words from Latin List 23 could describe someone who is ethnocentric?
** This is not a question on the questions page. However, I thought it might be useful in case she switches the words on the test, just like the previous one. :) An 'ethnocentric' person is one who is "racial or cultural prejudice" (dictionary definition). Using your Latin, this person with ethnocentrism could be someone with a 'doctrine' (ism) of 'center' (centri) 'culture' (ethno). This person is very close-minded and vulgar with others of discrepancies in culture and beliefs; they are very, very pusillanimous to any other person's beliefs; they are, in a way, 'egocentric'. The following words might be used to describe someone with "ethnocentrism": -egocentric (self-centered); Again, as mentioned previously, a person with "ethnocentrism" is small-minded and unaccustomed to any other belief than their own. They are against anything different than what they believe in. Someone of this classification might be full of himself and his own beliefs, or 'egocentric' (ego="I", centri="center"). -preclude (foreclose; As said earlier, an ethnocentric person is one who shuts other possibilities out, one who 'closes' (clud) 'before' (pre) understanding the reasoning and beauty of differences in beliefs. They are pusillanimous (I know I'm using this word a lot, but it is a great synonym for 'ethnocentric'.) and closed to any ideas but their own, regarding religious and cultural practices. -diatribe (abusive criticism); Someone racist and intolerant of other cultures may use harsh and virulent language to people of other cultures and heritages. -disputatious (argumentative); This person might question everything about a culture or religion, so they will argue about everything believed in the sector of the culture. They might me interrogative and very impending and menacing to those with different beliefs. -pugnacious (combative); Someone ethnocentric will be vile toward all others with different beliefs and traditions as them, so they might be very hostile and jumpy. This causes the 'pugnacious' (combative) stories you sometimes hear on the news about ethnocentric people doing crimes to those who are different.

Why does 'egocentric' mean what it does?
"Egocentric" (dictionary definition) means "self-centered" because "ego" means "I" and "centri" means "center". This word literally means "I-centered."

What are your emotional reactions to someone who is 'egocentric'?
Someone who is 'egocentric' is 'centered' (centri) around "themselves" (ego) (actual translation of 'ego' is 'I'.), one who does not pay any regard to others' thoughts or feelings. Someone egocentric is probably oblivious to the world around them, other than the mirror. People might, at first, admire their self-esteem, but after getting to know them, they would be discouraged in their own self, might be shier after shadowing someone with such a big head, and might be very seductive and way too obedient, after listening to someone rave about themselves.

Is it possible to create a piece of great music that is partially or totally 'cacophonous'?
As 'caco' means 'bad', 'phon' is 'sound', and 'ous' is 'full of', a cacophony is 'a sound full of bad'-ness. However, it is a matter of opinion whether or not the music is actually great, but if you thought it was, someone else might think it is just a bunch of noise. For instance, my dad is the biggest Rush fan out there, and I love their music as well (for their lyrics), but my mom thinks it is just a bunch of cymbals being slammed together in collective intervals; therefore, she thinks it is a 'cacophony', when, really, my dad and I think it is great music.

Break down the word 'prescience' and explain its Latin roots. Then, explain how the Latin relates to its dictionary definition.
"Prescience"= 'pre' (before), 'sci' (know) Dictionary Definition: 'foreknowledge' This relates because, if you "know something before", you already have the knowledge of it during and after it, whatever 'it' may be.

Which principles of American social and political life should remain sacrosanct?
Well, considering BOTH 'sacro' and 'sanct' mean 'holy' in Latin, or special, and the dictionary definition is 'sacred', there are many cultural traditions that have developed over the course of this country's history that many take to heart. These are some that I think should remain sacrosanct (holy and sacred): -the pride of the Americans while lifting the flag of the US -the temerity and bravery of our troops -french fries and burgers :) -our government principles (democracy, our monetary systems, and many freedoms we are granted) -the emotions we feel when singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" -our worldly affairs and how we handle stressful situations Feel free to e-mail the Cohort any more ideas of what you think should be kept sacrosanct in American culture. :)

Should high school students be more 'circumscribed' than they are currently? Why or why not?
"Circumscribed", in Latin, means to be "written (scrib) around (circum)", but the dictionary definition is a little bit clearer regarding the word's meaning (dictionary definition='limited'). This is, again, a matter of opinion, but personally, I do not think they should be more 'limited' because I think it is currently commensurately balanced with the amount of responsibility and accountability to the amount of restrictions high school students receive. High-schoolers have many responsibilities, but are mostly able to be held accountable for their actions and schoolwork under the certain limitations and boundaries set for them to guide them along the way.

What would the emotions of people around someone 'pugnacious' look like?
As 'pugnacious' means 'combative' (dictionary definition), and in Latin, 'full of (ous) fight (pugn)', a pugnacious person is one who has slim impulse control and is very edgy and jumpy. The emotions of other people around someone 'pugnacious' might be fright, stress/anxiety, extreme obedience/seductiveness, self consciousness, distrust in people who try to care for them, or nervousness/shakiness.

Can something unpleasant to see or hear still be calming to the soul and the mind and be considered 'art'?
Yes, this is very possible, however based primarily upon one's thoughts. For example, not all art pieces that artists make are necessarily considered 'calming' or 'good' in a sense, but rather, it paints a reality so profane and so true that it affects the viewer emotionally. Even though the art is not necessarily good to the eye, it is still emotionally powerful and is still considered a masterpiece.

Which principles in the American social and political lifestyle should be reexamined and not be kept considered by the majority to be 'sacrosanct'?
This is all up to personal opinion. I'm not going to get into this too deeply, because we should all have our own opinions. Things that may be reexamined to be 'sacrosanct' might be some shady or corrupt areas in the government, or about the American everyday lifestyle that are not quite put into place yet, and not necessarily completely benefiting the people. Formulate your own opinion about it, and feel free to share it with the group. :)

What learning decisions should be made by the school administrators at a secondary school, and what should be left to the students?
As this is also a matter of opinion, I think the curriculum and the amount of resources should be up to the administration of a secondary/high school, but the level of responsibility and level of commitment should come from the student.

How would the people around a loquacious person feel?
As 'loquacious' means 'talkative' (dictionary definition), and in Latin, "full of (ous) tongue/talk (loqu)", this person is very erratic in their movements and very rushed while talking. Their sentences are usually run-ons, and their brains go even faster than their mouths. People around a person like this might feel annoyed (by all the talking), stressed out with all the information being given, confused, after trying to understand what that person was saying, suspicion, or maybe noninclusive to someone to who talks like this.

What do you consider to be a 'cacophony' or a 'bad (caco) sound (phon)'?
Personally, I would call rap music and any music that is not based on personal experience, that is just a bunch of words to fill up a certain amount of time, a cacophony. Feel free to tell us what you think a cacophony is to you.

In what ways, do you think, is the American culture worth keeping 'sacrosanct'? If not, why?
The American culture is worth keeping 'sacrosanct', in my opinion, because it is so different than any other. We have the freedom to say what we want, have our own opinions, and have the independence to be who we desire, and not all cultures allow this. You might want to think about other reasons other than mine why the American culture is so important in order to be considered 'holy and sacred'. Feel free to share. :)

Should secondary school students be allowed to make serious mistakes in order to have a vital learning experience?
Once more, this is a matter of your thoughts, but in my opinion.... YES!!!! Without mistakes, your brain does not have any experience with failure. You need to fail, to breathe it in, and embrace it, because without failure, you could never be anything in life. For example, I misspelled the word "alligator" at the Regionals Spelling Bee in 6th Grade. I was so close to going to the State Bee, but I failed on spelling this word correctly. However, I will now never forget how to spell "alligator", and will always have that memory and experience to get me through life. Without mistakes and failures, you're left with nothing.

Do you know anyone with these traits? If so, what are your emotions around them?
This is up to who you know, but I know people very loquacious. They stutter and talk so fast I can hardly depict what they're trying to say. I also know people egocentric, and, I'll admit, your self-esteem sort of lessens and shrinks when you spend time with them. They are so obsessed with the way they look, or the way they are, that they shield everything else other than themselves out of their world. Please feel free to send the Cohort any other emotions you might feel if you were around anyone like the three mentioned previously: loquacious, pugnacious, and egocentric. :)

What is something that you consider to be a 'euphony', or 'good (eu) sound (phon)'?
Personally, I would say anything that has a good beat and heartfelt and realistic lyrics. Feel free to tell the Cohort about what you think is a great euphony to you.

How are the Latin and dictionary definitions of the word "circumscribed" different? How can the Latin be confused with the actual definition?
This is so because, in Latin, 'circum' is 'around' and 'scrib' is 'write', but this word does not mean to 'write around.' This word, instead, means 'limited' (dictionary definition).
