What was the Dredd Scott Court Case? Why was it important?

Scott was a slave that got moved to a free state then back to a slave state. He sued his owner arguing that he should be a free man now that he had gone to a free state ("once free, always free"). But the ruling was that Scott had no rights to sue since black people were not citizens. Then, the Missouri compromise was ruled unconstitutional and the north realized that the fed gov could not ban slavery in fed states. This was also the first time that it was acknowledged that blacks were not citizens.
