Volume and Density
1
What is matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space (volume) and has mass
1

What is length?

The distance from one point to another

1
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space something takes up
1
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter something is made of
1
What is the volume of an object with a length of 5 cm, a width of 2 cm and a height of 4 cm?
V = L x W x H V = 5 x 2 x 4 V = 40 cm3
2

Are all solids, liquids and gases matter?

yes

2

What unit do we use to measure length in science?

Centimeters Meters kilometers

2
What is the formula for finding the volume of a regular solid? What units are used?
Volume = Length x Width x Height Units = cm3
2

What is the unit for mass?

Grams (g) kilograms (kg) or milligrams (mg)

2

Find the density.........the mass of my glue is 114 grams and the volume of the glue is 200 cm3

.57 g/cm3

3

Would you consider water and ice both matter

yes

3
What tool is used to measure length?
A ruler or meter stick
3

What is the the  process called where you find the volume by putting water and the object in a graduated cylinder?

Displacement

3

Name the tool we use to FIND MASS and the tool we use to FIND WEIGHT

Balance for mass, scale for weight

3
If you flew to Jupiter would your VOLUME change?
No! You would still take up the same amount of space.
4
The tool used to measure temperature is _______.
A thermometer
4
How many millimeters are in one meter?
1000 mm
4
What tool is used to measure the volume of liquids? What are the units used?
Tool = graduated cylinder Unit = mL (milliliters)
4

Are mass and weight the same thing? Does mass ever change?

No- mass is measured in grams or kilograms and is always the same and measured using a balance.

Weight is NOT always the same.  It is measured in pounds or newtons and on a scale

4

If the starting volume in a graduated cylinder is 4.8 mL and the ending volume is 5.8 mL, what is the volume of the object dropped in the graduated cylinder?

1.0 cm3

5

When measuring the temperature in the metric system, what units do we use in science?

Degrees Celsius

5

How many millimeters are in a centimeter?

10 mm

5
Explain how to find the volume of an irregular solid.
1) Fill a graduated cylinder with water and mark the starting volume 2) Carefully slide in the object 3) Record the new volume 4) Subtract the new volume - starting volume to get the volume of the object
5

Which has more density?  A bowling ball or a basketball? explain

the bowling ball----it looks the same as the basketball but it has more mass in the same round shape

5

If Ms. Kahn took a rocket to the moon, would her MASS change? Would her VOLUME change? Would her WEIGHT change?

Mass would not change because Ms. K would still be made of the same amount of matter Volume would not change because Ms. K would still take up the same amount of space Weight WOULD CHANGE because the amount of gravity on Ms. K has changed
