Regression
Retreating from one’s responsibilities and problems by an attempt to return to the comfort of earlier years.

What does it mean to manage counter-aggression?
To avoid "catching" the other person's anger.

It must feel lonely thinking that no one cares about you.
What is the conflict cycle?
Sublimation
Changing the direction of one’s drive toward a worthy and acceptable goal. This defense mechanism lays behind many success stories.
What is the Limbic Brain?
"the kidney bean"; the emotional/feeling brain
Why is it important to validate the student?
Validating statements acknowledge the young person’s feelings.
They convey to the young person that you non-judgmentally accept their thoughts and feelings as important, real and understandable. You really hear them.
The teacher never does anything about it!

What is a timeline?
The second stage of LSCI. When a student tells their version of what happened during the stressful incident.
Conversion
Transferring distress to a physical manifestation such as illness or pain (psychosomatic).

Why is drain off so important for students who are escalated?
He deserved it! I warned him!
You feel strongly that he deserved that.
What is the "blue box" of the conflict cycle?
Student's negative self-concept, irrational beliefs, etc.
Displacement
Transferring an emotional reaction to a substitute when it cannot be directed at the one who caused it.
