During a busy open swim, a couple in the shallow area begins engaging in excessive PDA—kissing heavily, holding each other closely, and making other families visibly uncomfortable. Several parents give the lifeguard frustrated looks, and one even approaches the stand.

Parent (frustrated):

“Are you guys going to do something about that? My kids don’t need to see that.”

When the lifeguard approaches the couple, they immediately get defensive.

Couple:

“We’re not doing anything wrong. We’re just showing affection. Leave us alone.”

“I understand you’re just enjoying your time together, and I’m not trying to interrupt that. We’ve had several concerns from other guests, and we need to keep the environment comfortable for everyone.

I’m going to ask that you keep physical affection to a minimum while in the pool area. You’re welcome to stay and enjoy the water — we just need to keep the environment family-friendly. Thank you for understanding.”

A 15-year-old slips on the pool deck during a sprinting game. He falls backward, hitting his head hard. When you arrive, he is lying on his back, dazed, and says he “can’t remember what happened.”

His friends insist he is “fine” and try to sit him up. The teen himself says, “I’m okay, I just want to go home.”

You notice he has neck tenderness, numbness in his fingers, and is vomiting.

What is the MOST appropriate action?

A. Allow him to sit up since he is conscious and wants to leave; monitor for further symptoms.

B. Perform spinal motion restriction, keep him still, hold manual stabilization, and call 9-1-1.

C. Have him walk to a chair so he is more comfortable and continue assessing him.

It’s a busy afternoon, and several people are using the diving board. A teenage girl wearing a long, loose T-shirt and athletic shorts steps up to the board. Her clothing is visibly baggy and floating in the water as she climbs the ladder.

Lifeguard:

“Ma’am, before you jump, I need you to remove the loose clothing.”

The girl steps down but becomes upset, and her parent immediately approaches.

Parent (irritated):

“She’s completely covered! She’s not wearing anything inappropriate. Why can’t she dive like this?”

“I understand your concern, and I appreciate that she’s dressed modestly. The issue isn’t the appearance of the clothing — it’s the safety risk. Loose shirts and shorts can get caught on the diving board or restrict movement in the air or underwater.

For her safety, we only allow fitted swim attire on the diving board. She’s welcome to keep swimming as she is, but for the diving board she’ll need to remove the loose clothing or switch to tighter-fitting swimwear. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.”

It’s open swim, and several children are lined up to use the diving board. A young boy, about 6 years old, climbs onto the board. His parent enters the water just below the diving area and signals to the lifeguard.

Parent (calling up to the stand):

“I’m going to catch him! He’s scared, but this is how they do it in his swim lessons. It’s totally fine.”

The parent positions themselves directly under the board, arms open. The child hesitates on the edge, causing the line to back up.

The lifeguard blows a whistle.

Lifeguard:

“Sir/Ma’am, I’m going to need you to move out of the diving well.”

The parent looks annoyed

Parent:

“He can’t go alone! He only dives if I catch him. I do this in his lessons all the time. Why can’t I just help him?”

“I understand you want to help him feel comfortable. In swim lessons, instructors are trained and positioned safely for that activity. During open swim, nobody is allowed under or near the diving board because it’s a major safety risk — someone could land on you, and your child could get hurt if the jump doesn’t go as planned.

He’s welcome to use the board if he feels ready, but you’ll need to move to the side of the well. If he’s not comfortable diving alone yet, that’s perfectly okay — he can skip the dive today or practice jumps from the side of the pool where you can catch him safely.
