True or False: Light is a form of energy.

True

100

Sound can travel through these mediums

gas, liquid, solid

100

Light travels in a ____ line until it reaches an object or a new medium.

straight

100

When waves reach a new medium and bounce back

Reflection

100

how loud or soft a sound is

volume

200

True or False. If false, provide a correction to make the statement true.

Visible light is white light which is all of the wavelengths (colors) of light combined together.

True

200

B. Sound travels faster in solids than gases.

200

Use the marker to circle the wavelength of light that would reflect off of this apple.

Yellow ray (3rd from the top, under red and orange)

200

When waves reach a new medium and change direction (bend).

Refraction

200

Which travels faster, light or sound?

light

300

When light reaches a new medium through which it cannot transmit, it creates.....

shadows

300

Pitch can be changed by how fast an object ______. Objects that vibrate slowly produce ______ pitches while objects that vibrate quickly produce ______ pitches. Changing the __________ changes the pitch.

vibrates

low

high

speed of vibration

300

C

300

A material that allows all light to pass through

transparent

300

Which can travel through a vacuum: light, sound, or both?

light

400

Identify what behavior of light each of the following picture shows.
Hint: You may not use all 4 behaviors.

black box: absorption

glass of water & pencil: refraction

mirror: reflection

prism: refraction

400

After reading the graph titled "Instrument Pitch" which shows the pitch of each instrument (A, B, C, and D) place the instruments in order of fastest vibration to slowest vibration.

Fastest (1) to Slowest (4)

1. D (violin)

2. A (viola)

3. C (cello)

4. B (bass)

According to the graph, D has the highest pitch. The higher the pitch, the faster the vibrations. After D, A has the next highest pitch, then C. B has the lowest pitch which means it vibrates the slowest.

400

Changing this changes the pitch of a sound-- BE SPECIFIC, THE MOST CORRECT ANSWER

speed/rate of vibrations

400

A material that allows some light to pass through

translucent

400

Label the wave with the following: Light wave, Sound Wave, amplitude, wavelength.

Transverse: Light Wave

Compression Wave: Sound Wave

Amplitude = height

Wavelength = distance from crest to crest or trough to trough

500

Place the following materials in the order they would heat up when exposed to direct light. Where the TOP would heat up the MOST and the BOTTOM would heat up the LEAST.

*assume they were all heated for the same amount of time, by the same source*

**Shine = reflection. Reflection is the opposite of absorption. If light can't absorb then it can't turn into heat.

Extended Response: Using your understanding of energy in the form of sound, describe what is happening in the picture below. Make sure you are using R.A.C.E. and your scientific vocabulary.

The person is yelling "Hello!" which is creating sound by vibrating the air particles in the medium around him. These air particles vibrate the air particles near them which allows the compression wave to travel outwards away from the person. When the wave reaches the mountain, it reflects or bounces back to the person which allows him to hear his "Hello!" a second time. This is called an echo.

500

Match the behaviors of sound (letters) with the phenomenon/outcome (numbers) it creates

A. absorption

B. reflection

C. transmission

1. echoes

2. hearing through walls/closed doors

3. decreased volume

A. Absorption --> 3. Decreased volume

B. Reflection --> 1. Echoes

C. Transmission --> Hearing through walls/closed doors

500

In your own words, define the word opaque and give an example of an opaque object.

An object that no light passes through or that is completely not see through.

Example: Door, clothes, walls

500

When sound travels, it travels in a _________ until it reaches a new ______ or it runs into an object.

Sound can only behave three ways when reaching a new medium. When sound _______ back to the original speaker, you get an echo. When sound is ______, such as by screaming into a pillow, the volume of the original sound decreases. Lastly, unless the room is sound-proof, sound can even _____ through solid surfaces.

straight line

medium

reflects

absorbed

transmit

600

Place the correct temperature in the correct space in the table.

25oC

30oC

Final Temperature 1: 30

Final Temperature 2: 25

600

Tell me which state of matter sound travels fastest through AND explain WHY sound travels fastest through that medium.

Solid because sound has to have atoms/particles to vibrate and in a solid those atoms/particles are tightly packed together. The tighter the atoms/particles are packed together, the easier they are to vibrate and the faster the compression wave can travel.

In detail, using your Science vocabulary, and your full understanding of color, explain why this apple appears red.

To understand why the apple is red, we must first understand that light energy is created by all of the colors of visible light combining. Each color has a different wavelength. When white light hits the apple, all of the wavelengths except for red are absorbed into the apple and so our eye does not receive them. The red wavelength is reflected back to our eyes and is the only wavelength our eye receives and so we see the apple as red.

Word Association!

Through examples or sentences you must associate the following words:

Light, Transmit, Translucent.

Light is a type of energy. When most but not all of the light transmits through an object that object is considered translucent.

Light can partially transmit through translucent objects.

600

Light travels in a ________ until it reaches a new _____ or runs into an object.

When this happens, light can behave four different ways. The first is how we see things such as color, when light _______. The second is something only light can do and it is how we see rainbows. This is called ______. The third is why you might choose to wear shoes when walking on the blacktop on a hot summer day. When light _____ it causes that surface to _____ and can be dangerous to walk on. The last is when light _____ through transparent objects such as glass.
