What is Light?
A form of energy that you can see.
What is an incandescent light source?
Heating an object to high temperatures until it emits light. Example: Candle Light
What is a reflection?
Reflection happens when light strikes the surface and then bounces back off of that surface.
What is a refraction?
Refraction is when light bends when it travels from one medium to another.
What is a convex mirror?
Mirrors that curve outward. Example: Car door mirrors.
What is a Natural Light Source?
Light that comes from a natural source.
Example: Sun, Stars, Fire, Lightning
What is a Fluorescent light source?
Causes mercury to vaporize inside the tube and gives off ultraviolet energy. Example: LED lights
What are incident Rays and Reflected Rays?
Incident Rays: The light source that hits the object.
Reflected Rays: The light that is bouncing off of the object.
Why does light bend?
Light bends when light changes speed, this happens when light goes through materials with different densities.
What is a concave mirror?
Mirrors that curve inwards. Example: Makeup mirrors.
What is an artificial light source?
Man-made light sources.
Example: Lamp, LED lights
What is a Phosphorescent light source?
Light energy that is stored by certain particles and released as visible light and water. Example: Glow in the dark objects.
What is the plane mirror?
A mirror with a flat reflective surface.
What is the angle of refraction?
When the refracted ray goes away from the normal line.
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of reflection= The angle of incidence
What are examples of artificial and natural light sources?
Artificial= Light bulbs, LED lights, glow sticks
Natural= Sun, Stars, Fire, Lightning
What is a Chemiluminescent light source?
Light that can be released by chemical reactions. Example: Glow stick
What is the normal line?
The line that is in between the incident and the reflected ray.
What happens when light enters a less dense medium coming from a more dense medium?
Light bends from the line of normal.
How do smooth and rough surfaces reflect light differently?
Smooth surfaces reflect light very uniformly.
Rought surfaces reflect light very scattered.
What is the first basic principle of light?
Light is a form of energy.
Bioluminescent
Light emitted from living things (The chemical reactions inside living things) Example: Deep-sea fish
What are the angles of incidence and the angles of reflection?
The angle of incidence: The angle between the incident ray and the normal line.
The angle of reflection: The angle of reflection is the angle between the reflected ray and the normal line.
Why can refraction occur when light goes through different air temperatures?
Refraction can occur because air has different densities. Warm air is less dense than cold air.
How does a mirage occur?
When the air closer to the ground is hotter and less dense than the air higher up.
