The objective of the staff member is not to stop the behavior, but rather, to facilitate the expression of the motivating feeling, want, or need in a more acceptable manner.

Once you have identified the feeling or intent, you will be able to identify a healthy alternative.  Direct attention away from the original object by looking, pointing, and stating new alternatives.   Be creative in offering choices that you are comfortable with and proceed.
