What is Onomatopoeia?
The character that is the source of conflict in a literary work, sometimes this is also the “bad” character.

An overused, worn-out word or phrase.

The underlying lesson or main idea of a literary work that involves a statement or idea about the subject.

The writer or speaker refers either directly or indirectly to a person, event, or thing in history or to a work of art or literature.
What is Allusion?
An object or character that appears on the surface to be one thing, yet represents something else and carries a hidden, deeper meaning.
What is Symbolism?
A subtle way to encourage the reader to make stark comparisons between two or more contrasting elements in a story.
What is juxtaposition?
When two or more things couldn’t possibly be simultaneously true, but somehow are – appears to contradict itself but contains some truth, theme, or humor.
What is a paradox?
"A cool breeze carried carnival music and the aroma of popcorn my way. Just over the rise the lights blinked in a million colors." This appeal to the senses and the mental picture are this literary device.

When words are used to suggest the opposite of the literal meaning or when the opposite of what you expect happens.

A short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person.
What is an anecdote?
A literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.

Repetition of similar or identical sounds; often used in poetry.

An exaggeration.
What is Hyperbole?
When the first letters of words are the same and have the same sound as in: She shook the shears at the sheep.

Using adjectives to provide an explicit description of a character, such as their physical appearance, line of work, or hobbies.

A phrase that consists of two or more consecutive words that are contradictory to one another.

A figure of speech that makes a comparison using "like" or "as."

A figure of speech that compares two things that are unrelated, but which share some common characteristics.

A form of figurative language in which something that is not human is given human characteristics.

An author’s attitude toward his or her subject and audience.
What is Tone?
The introduction or beginning of a story that reveals important background information. This can include setting and details about characters.
