Character
The leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.
What is a protagonist?
A narrative, drama, or poem that follows a linear, chronological sequence.
What is a linear structure?
A line in a poem.

This refers to descriptive language that engages the human senses.
What is imagery?
Universal idea about life that one gets from a literary work (same as a thematic statement)

A type of figurative language in which non-human things are described as having human attributes.

Saying the opposite of what you mean; also used to describe situations in which the results of an action are dramatically different than intended.

A character who remains unchanged throughout a narrative or drama.
What is a static character?
Placement of things side by side for the purpose of comparison.
What is juxtaposition?
A basic repeated sequence of meter composed of two or more accented or unaccented syllables.
What is a foot?
A figure of speech that plays with words that have multiple meanings, or that plays with words that sound similar but mean different things

A phrase or assertion that appears to contradict itself (but the contradiction itself may have its own meaning).
What is a paradox?
A character’s traits that are implied and require an inference based on a character's actions or words or the reactions of other characters to this character.
What is indirect characterization?
A narrative technique that communicates a character’s interior thoughts, feelings, sensations, and associations in a continuous flow without regard for logic or formal structure.
What is stream of consciousness?
A rhythmic pattern that consists of ten syllables per line, with alternating stressed and unstressed syllables.
What is an iambic pentameter?
A figure of speech in which a writer or speaker exaggerates for the sake of emphasis.
