A struggle between a character and his feelings, fear, or conscience. Ex: Kyle believed that his friends were mean when they picked on the new girl on her first day at SMS. He chose to walk away.
What is a an internal conflict.
A struggle between two characters, mother nature, laws, beliefs of a group. Ex: The tornado reached Stamford and tore down the arena at the rodeo grounds. Braxton was attacked by a coyote last week near the lake. Mia and Madi got into an argument on the bus.
What is an external conflict.
The most exciting or intense part of the story for the protagonist. It's usually a turning point. To decide where this is in a story, always look where we know the outcome of the main conflict occurs. This usually happens just before this.
What is climax.
The sequence of events is interrupted in the story to show something that happened before the story's beginning.
What is flashback.
The most important idea an author presents in a story. It can be stated or implied.
What is main idea.
Compares one object or idea with another using the words "like" or "as" Ex. Mrs. Ekdahl is as busy as a bee!
What is a simile.
A conclusion based on too little data.
What is faulty reasoning.
The author gives clues or hints about what might happen later in the story.
What is foreshadowing.
The overall feeling of the story. Ex. playful, mysterious
What is mood
A comparison of two unlike things not using "like" or "as". Ex. The classroom was a zoo.
What is metaphor.
The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound. Example: Boom!
What is onomatopoeia
Any category of literature. For example, poetry, fiction, drama, nonfiction.
What is genre.
A word or group of words in a literary work which appeal to one or more of the senses: sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smell. You see this a lot in poetry!
What is imagery.
A shortened version of a longer work. It contains the main idea, the most important details, and the underlying meaning of the text. It must include the BME!!!
What is summary.
A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or object. My computer throws a fit every time I try to use it.
What is personification.
An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe it's true. It's like a million degrees in this classroom!
What is a hyperbole.
A decision that readers make after thinking about the information in the text. You take what you know (prior knowledge) along with your life experiences and put it together with what the author gives you AND then make an educated guess.
What is an Inference.
The main part of the plot and moves the story along. This is where complications arise.
What is rising action.
