Explain the "vicious cycle of violence"

Violence only leads to more violence. When someone hits someone else or violates their rights, the usual and expected response is a retaliation. So usually, when one side becomes violent the other side replies with violence, which makes the other side repeat the same, and it just continues. "Two wrongs do not make a right" (violence being the wrong). Eventually neither side is willing to forgive or seem "weak" or "give up on taking their rights back" and there is no way out.
