Homeostasis is keeping the right balance of something (eg: heat, water amount, salt, acidity, blood glucose, etc.).

Explain what is happening when a woman has her period (called menstruation), and what purpose it serves.

The uterine lining (the wall of the uterus/womb) is shedding because the woman failed to get pregnant that month. There is no need to keep it thick if no child will grow there. 

It will thicken again as a woman prepares to release another egg from her ovaries the next month.
