  1. The events of the Exodus are the focus of the Jews’ most important holiday, which is called Passover.  The yearly celebration of Passover is so important that God sets it up back in Exodus 12.  The heart of the celebration is a ceremonial meal called the Passover Seder.  The elements of the Seder are specially designed to recall the events of that first Passover.

The conquest of the Promised Land is a military mission so it starts with a military tactic, God has Moses choose 12 men, one from every tribe except Levites, to spy out the land of Canaan. The men are also supposed to inspire and encourage BUT only 2 men do, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh. The other 10 say they shouldn’t dare try because the people are giants and too strong and their city walls are too high and thick.

In Exodus 1, Pharaoh decides to have every male baby born killed.  However, two midwives name Shiprah and Puah “feared God” and therefore defied Pharaoh by letting the male children live.  When Pharaoh asks them, they made-up an excuse telling Pharaoh that the Hebrew woman gives birth before the midwives can get there.  To reward the faithfulness of Shiprah and Puah, God provides “households” for them.

On Mount Sinai, Here God presents the Mosaic Covenant to His people. Up until now, everything God did for them He did for Abraham’s sake and it was unconditional. What is the pattern in the Book of Judges? There are four.

1. The Jews abandon the one true God for false gods.  This infuriates God, causing him to withdraw His protection. 

2. The Jews soon get conquered by their enemies without God’s help.  They begin to cry out to God again.

3. God answers their cries by filling a Judge of Israel with His Spirit.  The Judge uses his God-given power to defeat the Jews’ enemies and renew their faith in God.

4. The Jews then forget all God has done for them and the pattern starts over.

 The second Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty, Amenhotep I, brought two big changes.  First, he built a city of the living to serve the city of the dead.  Then he wasn’t buried in his mortuary temple.  To try and trick grave robbers, he carved out a separate, secret tomb in a place called the Valley of the Kings.

Moses was almost one of those massacred newborns, but his mother hides him for 3 months and then lays him in a basket and puts him in a river’s bank.  The daughter of Pharaoh finds Moses and takes him in as her own. God calls Moses to become a leader and lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
