For a bonus lollipop, explain this graph

The map shows us two things:

  1. How heavy these black holes are. This is shown on the side of the map that goes up and down. The higher up we go, the heavier the black hole is.

  2. When these black holes first appeared. This is shown on the bottom part of the map that goes from left to right. The more we go to the left, the earlier these black holes appeared after the universe started.

The colors on the map tell us about different ways black holes can get so heavy:

  • The blue area tells us about black holes that got heavy by pulling in lots of stuff from around them really fast.
  • The red area tells us about black holes that got even heavier than the blue ones because they pulled in stuff super, super fast.
  • The gray area at the bottom right shows us where most of the black holes we know about are.

There are also two special points marked with a yellow sun and a yellow circle. They are very, very heavy black holes, and they are special because they showed up very early when the universe was young. Scientists are super curious about them because they're not sure how they got so heavy so quickly.
