The park was established by Henry VIII in 1536

 It opened to the public in 1637

Free speech and demonstrations -  Speaker's Corner has been established as a point of free speech and debate since 1872

In the late 20th century, the park became known for holding large-scale free rock music concerts

Observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames

It is Europe's tallest cantilevered observation wheel

The structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft).

Opened to traffic in 1973

It replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn replaced a 600-year-old stone-built medieval structure. This was preceded by a several timber bridges, the first of which was built by the Roman founders of London.

The bridge was closed later on opening day

It reopened in February 2002.

Established 1603 by James I, he ordered that the park be drained and landscaped, and exotic animals were kept in the park, including camels, crocodiles, an elephant and exotic birds

the park's name comes from a leper hospital

Today the lake is one of the park's most prominent features, but for six years last century, it didn't exist.

Pelikans who live in the park are descendants of the birds that were donated in 1664
