He understands that the real beast is the boys.
Why is the book called the Lord of the Flies
The Lord of the Flies is the pig head that was left for the beast. It is rotting flesh, so flies are attracted to it. Simon is the one who calls it this. He also realizes, after seeing it, that the real "beast" is the evil that is within us.
