How did the boys get to the island?
They were on a plane that crashed.
Why is Ralph the leader?
He got the most votes. The boys had a democratic election.

Calls a meeting to tell the rest of the boys that they are on an island and that there are wild pigs.
How do the boys start a fire?
They use Piggy's glasses. The sunlight through the glasses starts the fire.
What is Jack doing in the beginning of chapter 3?
Hunting. Jack is becoming obsessed with hunting.
What is a lagoon?
Water separated by reefs from the rest of the ocean. This is where the boys go swimming.
How does Jack feel about Ralph being the leader?
Jack feels humiliated. (He is upset and embarrassed because he thought he was going to win.)

There is a stream on the island. A stream is a source of fresh water. (You cannot drink ocean water.)
Why is Piggy upset (angry and disappointed) with the boys?
The boys rush to make a fire without making a careful, organized plan. All the boys run everywhere and the fire gets out of control. They were not being smart or safe.
What does Ralph say about how much the boys are helping to build huts?
He says the other boys do not help enough. They only help for a few minutes and then go swimming and play around. The boys are very lazy about helping.
How does Ralph feel at first when he realizes there are no adults?
He is excited (happy). He stands on his head to show how free this makes him feel.

What is the little boy with the birthmark afraid of?
A snake-like monster. He calls it a "beastie"
What is a "little’un"?
A little kid. The older boys call the little kids little'uns. The older boys are around 12 years old. The little boys are around 6 years old.
What problems are the little’uns having?
They are having nightmares. They are very scared- especially at night.
What is something Piggy knew that the other boys didn’t? (About their situation)
Piggy knows that the plane was shot down. He also knows there was an atomic bomb in England. He also says it might be a long time before they get rescued.

Ralph, Simon, and Jack. Piggy wanted to go too, but they ignored him.
What does Ralph say the boys need to do in order to get rescued by a ship?
Make a fire-- so that boats will see smoke and come to see if there are people that need to be rescued.
What happened to the boy with the birthmark?
(This was the boy who was afraid of the "beastie".) He disappeared. Piggy guesses that he must have been killed in the fire because no one was watching him or the other little kids.
What does Jack want to do before the boys get rescued?
Jack wants to kill a pig before they get rescued. He is obsessed with hunting.
