Ralph was the one who wanted to keep the fire going in chapter 2 just in case someone saw it, but Jack, being careless, never cared enough to keep it going. But in chapter 12, he was the one to start the fire.

When Ralph and Piggy are attacked one night by Jack’s tribe, what is stolen? How does this negatively affect Ralph’s tribe and how does this positively affect all the boys on the island?
-Piggy’s glasses are stolen. 

-Ralph’s tribe is negatively affected because they no longer have a source of power to cook and food, Piggy is completely blind, and they can no longer keep a fire going. 

-All the boys are positively affected because eventually Jack sets the whole island on fire which leads the boys’ rescue.

When Ralph is being chased, he eventually ends up on the beach. When he looks up, who does he see?

While Sam and Eric were looking after the fire, they saw a figure which thought was the beast. What was the figure? How did this figure lead to the death of Simon and how does it contribute to the savagery of the boys?
The figure was a pilot who had been killed during a war in the sky above the island. Sam and Eric see the figure, thinking it’s the beast which causes frenzy among the boys. Eventually, Simon is mistaken as the beast and is killed. The boys turn into savages during the process of hunting the beast.

This quote foreshadows the boys staying on the island forever. It also foreshadows the boys getting sick of not being rescued and eventually they will listen to Ralph and re-create the rescue fire.

During Jack’s feast, it starts to rain with great intensity. Ralph points out that Jack and his tribe have no shelter. How does this relate to the arguments between Jack and Ralph towards the beginning of the book?
Towards the beginning of the book, Jack and Ralph debate the importance of shelter versus the importance of food. Eventually, it is shown how shelter had always been the more important of the two.

It clearly shows the boys have gone out of control and there is no longer order within the group. The boys have lost all their innocence and nothing can get in their way.

This passage shows how Jack now has absolute power. He has become ignorant and selfish. Jack has brainwashed the boys who now have no thoughts of their own. Jack has taken possession of Piggy’s glasses, meaning Ralph’s tribe is now going to suffer and Jack’s tribe will overpower the island.
