What was the encomienda? 

The encomienda was a system that allowed virtually any Spaniard to work virtually any Native American Indians. 

Spaniards were supposed to feed, cloth, care, and Christianize the workers. But since the Indians had no value, they were worked to death, then others were gathered. 

The encomienda was far worse than slavery.
