What is a Safety Committee?

This piece of PPE needs to be inspected annually, comply with ANSI Z89.1-2003, and has to be replaced every 5 years. This PPE is worn daily by all employees, and it is good practice to inspect this piece of PPE each day.

What is a Hard Hat?

This control method involves protecting yourself from a hazard using gloves, respirators, fall harnesses, etc. This is considered the last resort you should take when trying to control a hazard.

What is PPE control method?

100

Weekly, scheduled inspections that aim to identify area hazards and verify area compliance with safety practices.

What is a Weekly Walkdown?

This hazard is present when working in a hot location.

What is heat stress?

A red binder in the control room that is a great tool to use when responding to both drills and real facility emergencies.

What is the Emergency Response Binder?

These hard hat attachments are a great way to protect yourself from splashes and projectiles but cannot be used instead of safety glasses.

What are Face Shields?

200

This control method reduces a hazard or prevents the worker from coming into contact with a hazard by modifying equipment or workspaces. An example of this control is guarding the moving parts of a machine, building an enclosure around noisy equipment, and installing ventilation in dusty area.

What are Engineering control methods?

200

These documents are kept in the control room, cover a certain job that is semi-routinely done in the plant, and list safety hazards encountered during each step of a job.

What is a Job Hazard Analysis?

200

A hazard that occurs when someone loses their balance or traction on a slippery surface.

What is a Slipping hazard?

300

This annual plan is developed by the Safety Committee and identifies safety initiatives and objectives to continuously improve workplace safety.

What is a Safety Improvement Plan or SIP?

300

These gloves provide excellent insulation and grip but should not be used when handling corrosive materials.

What are Monkey gloves?

300

This control method is the most effective way to control a hazard, and includes changing the work process to eliminate a hazardous step. Examples include not using a toxic chemical, not having to work from a high elevation, not having to enter a confined space.

What are Elimination control methods?

300

A monthly requirement, part of our bonus, and a great way to observe if a job is being performed safely.

What are Safety Observations?

300

This hazard is present when working within 6 feet of the edge of an unguarded, elevated platform and requires some use of fall protection to be controlled.

What is a fall hazard?

400

Handrails, non-slip treading on CTWR stairs, and physical barriers around open holes are an example of this safety management method.

What are Engineering Controls?

400

This type of PPE can be used for all types of jobs and is required for a handful of jobs. While it is a good practice to always wear this PPE, it is best to remove it when working with certain machinery that has spinning or moving parts.

What is Hand Protection?

400

This control method is similar to Elimination, but instead of eliminating the hazard present in a job, the hazard is replaced with a safer alternative. This can include using a water-based solvent instead of a mineral based solvent, using a tool that creates less noise, and using a material that creates less dust.

What are Substitution control methods?

400

This document is used to record discussions during the Safety Committee meeting and is shared with all plant personnel after each meeting.

What are the Safety Committee Meeting Minutes?

400

Large accumulations of wastepaper and cardboard, even when stored out of walkways to eliminate tripping hazards, can create this type of hazard.

What is a fire hazard?

Recordable Incident Rate, Housekeeping/Safety Inspections performed, Safety Incidents, Near Misses, and Good Catches are metrics used to monitor what type of performance.

This section of a chemical SDS details all the necessary PPE needed when handling the chemical.

Section 8 of SDS details proper PPE.

This control method works by establishing work practices that reduce the duration, frequency or intensity of exposure to hazards. Examples include re-scheduling an outdoor job for a day with better weather conditions to reduce cold exposure, requiring the level or pressure of tank to be recorded to reduce chemical exposure, and even training and signage.

What are Administrative control methods?

500

This assessment is found in Attachment 1 of General Safety Rules SMP and is used to assess the hazards of various jobs on site and the PPE required for that job.

PPE Hazard Assessment

This type of hazard is created when a machine has components that are transmitting energy, such as belts, chains, gears, and other rotating parts. One way to control this hazard is by using Machine Guards.
