Yes the apparitions are meant to deceive him, but Macbeth's insecurities made him think that he was invincible. Not allowing for him to think of any loophole to these apparitions.

What does the dog's tongue being put into the cauldron symbolize?
Ex. Dogs are usually quite loyal to a person so their tongue being taken away could represent loyalty being taken away also. Just like Macbeth's loyalty is shown to go away throughout the story.
