what is the difference between pain vs. suffering?

  • Pain is a physical or emotional sensation, like a stubbed toe, a broken heart, or anxiety. It’s often immediate and tied to a specific event or experience.
  • Suffering is the story or meaning we attach to pain, often prolonged by our thoughts, resistance, or fear. It’s the internal struggle around the pain.

Example:

  • Pain: You lose a friend.

    • Suffering: You replay the loss, wonder what you did wrong, fear future loneliness, and tell yourself it shouldn’t have happened.

What is a choice point?

It's when you're feeling anxious, stressed, or experiencing an uncomfortable emotion and you have a choice between whether you respond as the person you want to be, or make choices that take you away from the person you want to be.
