An alternating current flows through a coil of wire wrapped around a permanent magnet -> as the direciton of the current changes the direction of the magnetic field changes -> causes a change in the direction of the motor firce the wire experiences -> causes the coil of wire to oscillate back and forth -> causes the speaker cone attached tot he coil of wire to vibrate -> vibrations create sound waves

Explain how a generator works at a coal powerplant.

Combusting coal releases heat -> heat is used to boil water to make steam -> steam is directed past turbine blades and causes them to spin -> generator is connected to turbine and coil of wire spins in a magnetic field -> voltage is induced and current begins to flow

A transfomer increases the voltage to 400,000 V before the electricity is transported large distances over the transmission lines. 

The number of turns in the secondary coil is 500,000. How many turns are in the primary coil?

n1/n2 = V1/V2

n= V1n2 / V2

n1 = 25,000(500,000) / 400,000

n1 = 30,000 turns
