The life of a pirate was not like what you see in the movies. Many sailors died from either falling overboard in shark-infested waters or from plunging onto the deck from working the sails. Also, many pirates died from diseases such as scurvy and malaria. The only food they sometimes ate was hard tack and dried, salted meat. It's no wonder most of them didn't live very long!

Glow worms are not really worms. They are the larvae or the babies of the mosquito fly. Glow worms are found in New Zealand. They live in damp areas like caves. Glow worms live in groups called colonies. These insect larvae make a liquid that glows as it leaves their bodies. They also make webs to catch their food. Glow worms build their webs with silk threads. The threads stick to rocks or trees. Other threads hang straight down from the web. The glow worms squirt sticky drops onto the hanging threads. Small insects like gnats are drawn by the glow worms' light. The little insects get stuck on the threads. Then, the glow worms feel the movement of the trapped bugs. Next, the glow worms travel to the insects and eat them. Glow worms can be very bright. However, only the brightest glow worms can be seen in full moonlight.

Sunscreen

The more often you go outside when the Sun is out, the higher your risk of getting skin damage. That is why you should take care and use sunscreen. Sunscreen helps protect the skin by keeping ultraviolet A and B rays away from the skin. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays are thought to cause skin cancer. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are the main cause of sunburns.
When you choose a sunscreen, be sure to choose one with "broad spectrum protection." That means the sunscreen will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. In addition, you need to pay attention to the SPF, or sun protection factor. The SPF tells you how well a sunscreen protects you from UVB rays. However, a high SPF does not mean that it will protect your skin better than one with a low SPF. Your choice of SPF depends on your skin type and on how easily you get sunburns. Even though you may put on sunscreen before you head outdoors, you need to reapply it every two hours. You also need to apply a golf-ball size amount of lotion evenly onto your body. If you swim or sweat a lot, you may have to apply sunscreen more often.
Although sunscreen is a good way to protect your skin, the best way to prevent skin damage is to limit your time outdoors. The Sun is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Therefore, you should avoid going outside during that time period.

What is paragraph 2 mostly about?

In the piece, paragraph 2 states that when choosing a sunscreen, one should keep in mind factors such as the lotion SPF, personal skin type, and sun exposure.

In 1986, a new species of dinosaur fossil was discovered. Explorers since then have explored the base camps of the first explorers. A fruitcake, which had been perfectly preserved in the freezing temperatures, was found in one camp. It was "deemed edible," but few people want to eat fresh fruitcake. So, no one was willing to try it.
