No two study environments are the same, however, the key is to create an environment that works best for you.  Your study environment may be at the local coffee shop, in the library, in the GL rooms or at home on your patio.

What is 48.4 percent?  As a student, many of your will be balancing competing commitments.  In order to "have enough" time for coursework, you may need to delay non-urgent tasks, delegate non-important tasks, and decrease the tasks that don't directly assist with meeting your academic goals!

The  Eisenhower/P r _ _ r i _t y Matrix suggests learners COMPLETE the most Important and most Urgent tasks that only they can do before anything else & DELETE the least Important and least Urgent tasks that don't align with their ultimate goals.    


The Eisenhower/Priority Matrix, uses task Importance and Urgency to prioritize time management.  

  • Complete Tasks that are both High Importance and High Urgency- Studying for your upcoming exam.
  • Schedule Tasks that are Important, but not Urgent- Making an appointment to see the dentist.
  • Delegate Tasks that are Urgent, but not Important- Asking roommate to pick up weekly groceries.    
  • Delete Tasks that are both Low Importance and Low Urgency- Heading to Disney the week of Finals.

We often feel like we have all the time in the world to get things done. However, time is finite... just like money.  If you were to earn a dollar for every hour of the day, how much money would you earn each day?

There are many different ways to determine the order of your tasks including setting priorities based upon the Due Date/Deadline, Task Importance, Task Urgency, and/or whether or not others are counting on you!

The P _ m _ _ _ _ o technique is a well-known productivity interval that has been shown to improve your productivity. It gives you a prescribed interval of 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. After 4 work intervals, there is a 15-minute break.

What is the Pomodoro technique. 

How it works: Choose a task you need to get done; Set a timer (e.g., for 25 mins); Focus on the task at hand; When the timer rings, put a checkmark on a piece of paper.

Take a short break: Take a break for about three to five minutes. Go for a walk, grab a cup of coffee, do something non-work-related to give your brain a break.

Repeat steps two to five: Once you have completed this process four times, you can begin to take longer breaks (20–30 mins).

Time is considered a  f _ n _ _ e resource, because it is not infinite, but instead is definite and has definable limits (such as having 24 hrs/day or 168 hrs/week). 

What is a finite resource?--- Because time is finite, it is advised students pre-plan and schedule assignments, meetings, or important dates.  Students can use Academic Planners, Bullet Journals, White Boards, Online tools, and/or sticky notes to stay organized, track projects and exams, follow class schedules, meet deadlines, and take notes.

Taking breaks during your study time is a necessary function for academic success. Taking breaks allows your brain to rest, facilitates deeper learning of your course materials, and breaks you out of the routine of over studying/cramming.

What is the Ivy Lee Time Management Method?

“Here’s how it works:

  1. At the end of the day, decide on six things (limit yourself to six) you would like to achieve tomorrow.
  2. Then put the tasks in order of priority putting the most important task first.
  3. When you arrive at work the next morning, focus on the first task until it is complete. Then move onto task two and so on.
  4. At the end of the day, if you have any tasks left over, these should go on your list of six things for tomorrow.
  5. Repeat these steps for each workday.”

What is Distributed Practice?

Distributed practice works best by spreading your study sessions out over time.  For example, instead of doing 5 hours of study on Saturday night, you can study for 1 hour for 5 days.  You get the same amount of study time, however, you have time to consolidate your knowledge over a few days which makes it easier to remember.

Cramming or an exam the night before and exam is less effective then studying the same material  for 30 minutes a day over a 5 day period.  This distributed practiced strategy is also called S p _ c _ d Practice.

While it is tempting to pull an all-nighter, studying for multiple hours at a time, spaced practice allows you to learn the same material over a course of days.  Space learning is effective as it allows you to consolidate your knowledge, not just memorize it.

Decision fatigue occurs when you have so many decisions to make that by the time you are done you may be exhausted and worst you may have ignored or put off making a decision.  Planning for your upcoming day the night before allows you simply to enact your plan the next day.  Think Food Prepping, but for studying and learning.
