The Mormons decide to move to Illinois, but the people of Illinois hate them as well. Within five years, twenty-thousand Mormons lived in Illinois, which angers the citizens. Joseph Smith is murdered. The Mormons are lead from Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah. They are lead by their new leader, Brigham Young. Young brings them out west to avoid persecution.

A Missouri slave sued for his freedom, claiming that his four-year stay in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory made free land by the Missouri Compromise had made him a free man. The U.S, Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue in federal court because he was property, not a citizen.

1846 - a small army under Colonel Stephen W. Kearny captured Santa Fe with no opposition. Kearny then went to California to join a conflict already in progress. He brought the American forces under his command and had captured California.
