Is forgiveness the same thing as accepting an apology? Why or why not? Do you have to do either?

No. Forgiveness is for the person forgiving. It is for that person’s own peace and requires nothing from anyone else.

Apology acceptance is about reconciliation and restoring the relationship. We release others from accountability as they acknowledge harm.

Neither are required. You can forgive and accept apologies while maintaining boundaries.
