Tells you what a map is about

Explain what the following information tells you if you see it on a map:

1 cm = 25 m

A distance of one centimeter on the map is equal to 25 meters in real life in the area that the map represents.

100

This line of latitude runs around the earth at zero degrees and splits the earth into northern and southern hemispheres.

Equator

200

Half of the earth

hemisphere

200

Part of a map that compares distance on the map with the real world

scale

200

Why is it important to put a scale on a map?

A scale helps us understand how big the area is that the map represents.  We can use it to understand how far apart in real life things are when we see them on a map.

200

These lines are also called parallels. They run east to

west and circle the earth. They measure how many

degrees north or south of the equator a location is.

latitude

300

The exact location of a place on earth, usually given in coordinates

absolute location

300

List the four directions on a compass rose in the correct order.

North, east, south, west

300

The map scale on a map of Kyiv region says

1cm = 10 km.

A distance of 9 centimeters on the map would represent how many kilometers in reality?

90 kilometers

300

This line of longitude runs from north to south at zero degrees and divides the earth into eastern and western hemispheres.

Prime Meridian

400

Explain what coordinates are, and how they help us when working with maps.

Coordinates are a set of numbers that helps us locate places on earth using degrees.  The first number marks the distance north or south of the Equator, and the second number marks the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.

400

Why is a legend or key an important part of a map?  How does it help you?

This tells you what the colors, shades, or symbols mean on a map, so you can understand what you are looking at.  Not all maps have this.

400

The map scale on a map of capital cities in South America says

1cm = 500 km.

The real-world distance between Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, and Peru’s capital, Lima, is approximately 3000 km. How many cm apart should these two cities be on the map?

6 cm

400

Use a map of Europe with latitude and longitude lines to answer the following questions:

Which country is at the following coordinates:

52 degrees N, 18 degrees E

What are the coordinates for the island of Cyrpus?

Poland

35 degrees N, 33 degrees E

500

Explain the difference between a map, a globe, and an atlas.

A map is a flat representation of an area.

A globe is a spherical representation of an area.
An atlas is a book or collection of different maps about an area.

500

These two lines of latutide run around the earth at 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south, and mark the point where the sun shines directly on the earth during the summer and the winter.

Tropic of Cancer
