Who invented scuba diving?

Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

What is farm fishing? Where do they find and keep their fish?

Farm fishing is the commercial breeding of fish, typically for food. These fish are usually kept within tanks or fish ponds that are in secluded areas.

100

What is wild-caught fishing? Which habitats can they be found in?

Wild-Caught fishing is the act of fishermen collecting fish in their natural habitats. This includes rivers, lakes, oceans, etc.

What are the steps - in order - of the scientific method?

Step One: Find a question.

Step Two: Create your hypothesis.

Step Three: Conduct an experiment.

Step Four: Record your data.

Step Five: Create an analysis.

Step Six: Final Report.

Define Marine Biology.

Marine Biology, by definition and as per the slides, is the  study of aquatic organisms living in the rivers to the seas. It primarily focuses on marine life, classifying species based on the environment.

Which scientist bought the wonders of the sea to the people with lyrical writing and observations?

Rachel Carson

Why might someone recommend farm bred fish?

In simpler terms, one might argue that wild caught fish is a problem and leads to several cons. Farm Fishing helps to manage Earth's natural resources, it keeps a steady supply, it provides relief for wild animals, it protects habitats, there are lower prices, and it gives citizens employment opportunities.

List at LEAST three benefits of wild caught fishing.

{ if you get at least one you will receive the points, but make educated guesses! }

- Nutritional Advantages

- Leaner Meat (healthier option)

- Less Chance of Contamination

- Less Risk of Disease and Infection

- No Antibiotics or Growth Hormones Used

Medical Field Purposes? Name at least 2.

{State any and all answers! We would love to hear others not listed in our answer!}

-Coral heavily resembles human bone. With this being said, it has been used in the past for bone grafting, allowing them to heal quickly and efficiently.

-Sea Urchins are used in research on regeneration.

-Dried Seahorses apparently have the potential to cure infertility, baldness, asthma, and arthritis.

What is threatening marine biodiversity?

As you may know, this list can go on forever and ever. However, to name a few, there is over-exploitation, pollution, climate change, and new invasive species.

300

Who invented the first oceanographic camera?

The first oceanographic camera was TECHNICALLY developed by engineer Jean de Wouters. However, it was designed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The camera was initially released in Australia during the year of 1963.

Dr. Hans Hass was the one who invented the first underwater FLASH cameras.

300

Is farmed fish healthy? Why or why not?

Technically and according to the FDA, yes, farmed fish is healthy. They can offer the same nutritional values and health benefits as wild caught fish per se. In some cases, individuals have even said they prefer the flavor of farmed fish over wild-caught.

300

List at LEAST three downsides to Wild - Caught Fishing!

{ if you get at least one you get the points, but, make educated guesses! }

- Over Fishing

- By - Catching

- Destruction of Habitats

- Almost Extinct, Population Collapse

300

What percent of the earth do oceans cover?

71 percent

300

When did the study of marine biology begin (historically)?

The study of marine biology began as early as 1200 B.C.

400

Who was the person that found the Titanic?

Dr. Robert Ballard

400

Are farmed fish treated with growth hormones or antibiotics? Please explain your answer.

YES. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.

Farmers need to engage in any or all health precaution management to ensure that the fish stay strong and clean, essentially doing whatever means necessary to prevent illnesses from spreading.

400

Why is wild-caught fish more expensive than farmed fish?

Wild Fish are fish caught in their natural environments. Their diets are high quality and more diverse than those who are kept in farms. They are not fed antibiotics and the chance of them transferring anything related is low.

400

Who was the first person that introduced specific references to marine life? When was this time?

The writings of Aristotle from 384 to 322 BC allowed us to gain certain insights of the different species within the ocean. He is often referred to as the father of marine biology?

400

What is the deterioration process of things left behind underwater?

The deterioration process of things left behind underwater doesn't necessarily happen. All things plastic - related - break down into smaller pieces and is the ingested by marine life most of the time. Anything else does not decompose. Instead, it has the ability to sink all the way to the bottom of the ocean and it will stay there if it does not float back up.

500

Which marine science influencer spent most of their time within the aquarium at a young age?

Eugenie Clark

500

Do farmed fish have high or low levels of mercury or any other highly toxic chemicals? Please elaborate.

Both wild and farmed fish have relatively low levels of mercury, PCB's, and other contaminants. Notably, these toxins accumulate within fatty tissues, tending to be more present in larger fish like tuna. Individuals would find themselves opting for farm raised in a controlled environment. Along with this, the toxic chemicals are easily traceable and noticeable if they are within the fish ponds.

500

Are wild-caught fish sustainable or non sustainable? Why or why not?

Wild caught fish are seen as non sustainable. Farmed fish are because they help to reduce the stress on wild fish populations within the ocean.

Wild caught fish are more on the bad side for the sole purpose of all the downsides that we have mentioned previously.

500

What other sciences are used in marine biology?

- Biology

- Chemistry

- Physics

- Geology

- Oceanography

What was the first topic discussed when the research on marine biology began? Educated Guess!
{HINT: the act of using the position of stars and other bodies to help with positions}

It all started out with Celestial Navigation.
