It's hard to imagine what things were like before there was money, but such a time did exist. During these times people exchanged goods using the barter system. The word barter means to trade. People using the barter system traded things instead of buying and selling them. So if you were a rice farmer, you would trade your rice with many people to get all the things that you wanted or needed. Unfortunately, the people from whom you needed things might not want your rice. Isn't it nice to just go to the store and buy candy instead of having to trade rice for it?
The world used to be different because you couldn't just buy things with money.

Police today reported the capture of the man who has been robbing doughnut shops in the area. The robber would break in during the early morning hours while employees were getting ready to open shop. There were still two stores in the area that the robber hadn’t hit. They knew he always stole a bag of powdered sugar doughnuts. Police coated several dollar bills with a special glue that left the surface slightly sticky. When the robber touched the money with his sugarcoated fingers, the sugar would stick to the bills. The trap was now ready.
Two days later, the robber struck again. Police had told store owners in the area to be on the lookout for the sugary bills. The next day, police caught their main at a local grocery store. He had paid for his groceries with cash, and the clerk had noticed white spots on all the bills.
As he was led away, the robber said, “My mother always said sugar was bad for you.”
