Marlboro County Schools consolidate to form Marlboro County High.
What/When were the 1980s. Bennettsville, Blenheim, Clio, McColl and Wallace high schools merged to form MCHS. Classes started at the new school in 1989.
Although he never visited, the county seat is named for him.

Marlboro County becomes a county.
When was the 1780s. On March 12, 1785, Marlboro County was established by the South Carolina General Assembly according to its powers as described in the 1778 Constitution of the State of South Carolina during the American Revolution. It was named for the Duke of Marlborough. The nascent county remained part of what was then known as Cheraws District until 1798, then in 1800 Marlboro became a district itself.
This college president is buried in Marlboro County.
Who is Dr. A. M. Shipp, the second president of Wofford College and later Vanderbilt. He is buried in old Gillespie Cemetery in Wallace. He died at Rose Hill plantation.

Bennettsville elects its first mayor.
What was the 1880s. J. D. Murchison was the first mayor, serving a one-year term. After four men served for just a year, the term of office was changed to four years, with Knox Livingston serving 1885-1889.
He lived in Bennettsville but another town was named for him.
Who was D.D. McColl. He was the owner of the textile mill in McColl, as well as the first bank in the county.
Located on the site of Marlboro County's first airport.
What is Marley Engineered Products. Known as Woodle Field, the airport was in use by the 1930s. It was later called Rowe Airport operated into the 1960s.
She was Bennettsville's first female mayor.
Who was Jesse Matheson Blackwell. She became mayor after the death of mayor C.L. McCormac. She had been appointed mayor pro tem and was elevated to the office after McCormac's death in 1961, She later ran for mayor and was elected in 1967. Blackwell served until 1973. Since then four more women have served as mayor.
This early MCHS standout was the first Bulldog to play in the NFL.
Who is Anthony Cook.
The state's first black police chief is named.
What is the 1970s. Eugene "Pete" Copeland became Bennettsville's chief of police in 1973 and served until 1990, when he retired.
Eddie Rickenbacker was his boss.
Who was William White Palmer. The World War I pilot was a member of Rickenbacker's famous 94th Aero Squadron (the Hat-in-Ring squadron). He was credited with shooting down three German aircraft. The WWII-era airfield outside Bennettsville was named in his memory.
Located across the road from the first county seat.
What is Domtar. The original courthouse for Marlboro County was at the now-forgotten village of Carlisle. It was near the Domtar paper mill.
The first state senator from Marlboro County.
Who was Gen. Tristram Thomas. The former Revolutionary War militia leader served first the St. Davids Parish, then when it was divided into Marlboro, Chesterfield and Darlington counties, he was elected to serve Marlboro.
This coach led Marlboro County High to basketball title game twice, winning in 2001.
Who was Ken Spencer. Spencer is now the head coach at Fayetteville State University.
