A couple want to get married in the temple, but there closest temple is oversea's. They think maybe they should just get civilly married. What advice might you give them?

A temple marriage is worth any sacrifice. Many couples wait for a long time until they can afford to travel to the temple closest to them. If you marry outside the temple, you will need to wait at least a year before you can be sealed in the temple, unless civil law in your area requires you to be married outside the temple first. Your bishop or branch president can give you additional counsel.

  • Your blessings aren’t limited by your parents’ choices. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, each person is responsible for their own covenants and can receive eternal family blessings through faithfulness.

  • Sealings can happen later. Parents who weren’t married in the temple can be sealed later in life, and temple ordinances can also be performed by proxy after death.

  • You can create an eternal family moving forward. If you are sealed in the temple, your future children can be part of that eternal family.
