Mrs. Parks gave King numerous ideas and they greatly supported each other’s work.

What are protest “sit ins”? On February 1st 1960, four black students from North Carolina began a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter at Woolworth’s Diner. The students were not served, but were allowed to remain at the counter. This event triggered many other similar non-violent protests, six months later; the same students were served at the same counter at Woolworth’s. Nonviolent student sit-ins were used in integrating pools, parks, libraries, and theatres throughout the south.

In 1945, at the age of fifteen, he entered Atlanta's Morehouse College under a special wartime program intended to boost enrollment by admitting promising high school students like King. At Morehouse College, King favored studies in medicine and law, but these were diminished during his senior year by a decision to enter the ministry, King graduated from Morehouse College in 1948. Subsequently he attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence. From Crozer, he went to Boston University, where he studied man’s relationship to God and received his doctorate degree, in 1955.

King visited India in 1959 years after Gandhi’s assassination, and King did not experience any anger or hatred. This convinced Dr. King that nonviolence was the best way to achieve freedom and equality. Gandhi’s new way of looking at things was King’s biggest influence in his decision to use nonviolence.

What are the Freedom Rides of 1961? The Supreme Court decision of Boynton v. Virginia in 1960, ended segregation for passengers engaged in interstate travel on Buses. The first Freedom Ride of the 1960’s left Washington D.C on May 4th, 1961 and was scheduled to arrive in new Orleans on May 17, 1961. This Freedom ride was the first public test against the Supreme Court decision the previous year ending segregation. Many of the first Freedom Rides experienced violence, hatred, and arrests. Yet these Freedom Rides eventually were successful.

Who is Clyde Kennard? Kennard was a black Korean War veteran who attempted to enroll at Mississippi Southern College. The college president (Dr. McCain) made major efforts to prevent Kennard’s enrollment. Dr. McCain went to The Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, the Commission was used to spy on and undermine the Civil Rights movement. Kennard was arrested twice on trumped-up charges and served seven years in the state prison. In 1962, James Meredith won a lawsuit that gave him admission to University of Mississippi. The Governor denied Meredith access to Campus. The Courts fined the governor for and finally on September 30th 1961, Meredith walked onto campus escorted by marshals. He was welcomed with riots and violence.
