Give one way that the Zoot Suit movie musical was different than what happened in real life.

The movie's main character is Henry Reyna but his real name was Henry Leyvas.

The movie emphasizes musical numbers, which were not a part of the real events.

The character of El Pachuco, played by Edward James Olmos, is a symbolic figure and does not represent a real person involved in the trial.

The film portrays a dramatic courtroom scene, but the real trial was less theatrical and more focused on legal proceedings.

In the movie, Henry's romance with a young woman, Della, is fictionalized, with no real-life counterpart.

The movie's portrayal of the Pachucos as the primary focus of the riots simplifies the social dynamics, as the riots also involved servicemen and other groups, not just Mexican Americans.

According to MAS DAY 23 Source 1, How were African American and Mexican American Zoot Suiters similar?

Both groups "received similar treatment from law enforcement, judges, juries, and the general Anglo public."  Through zoot culture, however, Black and Mexican working-class youth crossed boundaries to form alliances and assert their humanity in the face of this degrading treatment.

Also, Mexican Americans got the style from African Americans.

What does it mean to do stoop work?  Why did workers not want to do stoop work?

Stoop work refers to manual labor that requires workers to bend over or squat for long periods, often in agricultural fields.  This type of work is physically demanding, often causing back pain, fatigue, and other health issues due to the constant bending or squatting. Workers did not want to do stoop work because of low wages and harsh working conditions. It was often done in extreme heat or under poor conditions, with little job security or benefits.

How can the Pachuca/Pachuco style be seen as a form of resistance?

The Pachuco style, with its bold zoot suits and distinctive fashion, represented a rejection of mainstream American culture (rationing) and its expectations for Mexican Americans. It symbolized defiance against racial discrimination, asserting pride in Mexican heritage and identity. By adopting this style, Pachucos challenged societal norms and created a visible counterculture in the face of prejudice

Why did the Bracero Program end?

By the 1960’s there was a dramatic decline in demand for Mexican labor, specifically farm labor, as a result of the introduction of new labor-saving farm machines.
