What type of fossil this?

Trace

100

Which mass extinction is known as the deadliest?

Permian-Triassic

100

What does "evolution" mean?

Change over time

100

Where (what environment) did the first forms of animals originate?

The ocean?

100

List 2 solutions that an individual could do to stop or slow the current 6th mass extinction

Will vary....recycle, educate yourself or others, use re-usable items, not plastic, advocate to local officials...

200

What types of fossils is these?

mold (C) & cast (D)

200

Which mass extinction does the KT boundary/ astroid theory belong to?

Cretaceous Tertiary

200

100 points = What is an inherited trait?

100 points = Give an example

a physical feature that is passed down from biological parent to offspring.

Examples will vary: eye color, hair color, height, nose shape, eye shape

200

Which came first, birds or mammals?

Mammals

200

According to the marine species graph, what happened to the population 250 MYA and present day?

The population increased

300

How can fossils provide evidence of evolution?

You can see how the organisms bones change over time and which species lived when based on the rock layer its found

300

This % of species must go extinct to be considered a mass extinction

70% (or more)

300

What is this photo an example of?

Variation

300

Think back to pocket mice activity: What caused the dark mice to survive better in the environment?

They had dark fur so they blended in better on newly covered dark rocks caused by a volcanic eruption

300

Which type of feature does each photo show?

Left = Homologous

Right = Analogous

400

Which fossil layer is the oldest? How do you know

The bottom green one, because it's at the bottom. The more recent fossils will be on top.

400

What do scientists believe the cause of the Triassic Juriassc extinction was?

Pangea & Volcanic Eruptions

400

What does speciation mean? Give an example.

A new species is created/ evolved from a previous one.

Ex: Amphibians from fish (or any other that evolved from a precious one)

400

Explain the difference between evolution & natural selection

Evolution is change over time...natural selection is survival of the fittest

400

Which type of structure tells us that organisms inherited a feature from a common ancestor?

Homologous Structures

500

Why are there no fossils in layer X?

This was during the time of a mass extinction

500

These 2 mass extinctions are categorized by having temperature decreases.

Ordovician-Silurian & Late Devonian

500

Explain Natural Selection. Include the words: fit, reproduce & trait.

Natural Selection is when the organisms that are most "fit" for the environment survive. Meaning the organisms that are easily able to get enough food/ resources & hide from predators will reproduce more and the organisms that are not able to do these things will die out. Therefore the organisms that are more fit will continue to reproduce & pass on their traits to their offspring and continue to thrive wile the other organisms will die out.

Recall 2 facts from any of the Evolution Newspaper articles...your classmates will fact check you

something they ate, feature they evolved during that time, what happened to make them have to change (what caused the evolution), an adaptation they had (giraffes grew longer necks to eat off tall trees)

500

Name the 5 ways Humans are contributing to the current 6th mass extinction

1. Rising CO2 levels

2. Habitat Destruction

3. Invasive Species

4. Pollution

5. Over Harvesting
