What is the definition of volume?
Volume is the amount of space something takes up
100
What is the formula for density?
D=m/v

What is the density of a piece of wood that has a mass of 25.0 grams and a volume of 29.4 cm3?
D= .85g/cm^3
100
What is the density of water?
1g/cubic centimeter

When liquid is poured into a graduated cylinder it creates a curve. What is this curve called?
The meniscus
200
What tool would you use to find the volume of a liquid?
Graduated Cylinder
200
What is the formula for Mass?
M= DxV
200
An ice cube measuring 5.80 cm by 5.80 cm by 5.80 cm has a density of 0.917 g/mL. What is the mass?
M=179g
200
What are the units we use for density?
g/cm^3 for a solid or gas g/mL for a liquid
200
What tool do we use to measure mass?
Triple Beam Balance
300
Finish the sentence: Density is.....
the amount of matter in a specific space
300
What is the formula for Volume?
V= M/D
300
A piece of wood that measures 3.0 cm by 6.0 cm by 4.0 cm has a mass of 80.0 grams. What is the density of the wood? Would the piece of wood float in water?
D=1.1g/cm^3 It will sink.
300
Explain how you know if an object would sink or float in water?
The density of water is 1g/cm^3 so if an objects density is more than that it will sink, if it is less it will float.
300
What is the method used to find the volume of an irregular shaped solid?
Liquid Displacement
400
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter an object is made up of
400
What is the formula for a regular solid object?
V= LxWxH
400
The density of aluminum is 2.70 g/mL. If the mass of a piece of aluminum is 244 grams, what is the volume of the aluminum?
V= 90.4 mL

In class we watched a video on how lava lamps work, explain why the wax floats and sinks in the lamp.
Typically wax has a higher density then water so it sinks, however in a lava lamp there is a bulb at the bottom that heats the wax up and causes the molecules in the wax to expand which increases its volume. When the volume of the wax increases the density decreases which causes it to float.
400
When measuring an irregular solid using liquid displacement what units do I use and how do I calculate them?
1mL=1cm^3
500
Explain how changing an objects mass and/or volume will change its density
The formula for density is D=M/V so if you change the mass or volume of an object the density will increase or decrease. For example if you increase an objects mass but the volume stays the same the density will increase because there will be more matter in the same amount of space. If the mass stays the same and the volume increases the density will decrease because the matter will be more spread out.
500
What is one way to figure out the three formulas for density, mass and volume?
Density Triangle or Algebraically

A little aluminum boat (mass of 14.50 g) has a volume of 450.00 cm3. The boat is place in a small pool of water and carefully filled with pennies. If each penny has a mass of 2.50 g, how many pennies can be added to the boat before it sinks?
174 pennies 2.5 x P + 14.5 = 450
500
An objects density is 350 kg/m^3 on earth. What would the objects density be on the moon?
The same because the mass and volume would remain the same.

A cup of gold colored metal beads was measured to have a mass 425 grams. By water displacement, the volume of the beads was calculated to be 48.0 cm3. Given the following densities, identify the metal. Gold: 19.3 g/mL Copper: 8.86 g/mL Bronze: 9.87 g/mL
Copper, 8.86 g/mL
