The book measures 15 inches. How many feet is that?

1 foot and 3 inches or

1 and 1/4 feet

The top number is called the ____ and the bottom number is called the ____.

Numerator (top) and denominator (bottom)

Read this number: 4.32

Four and thirty-two hundredths

I am a triangle with two sides that measure the same length. What type of triangle am I?

Isosceles

40 inches = ___ feet?

40/12 = 3 feet and 4 inches or 3 and 1/3 feet

The area of our classroom is 800 square feet. If the length is 20 feet, what's the width?

L x W = Area

20 x 40 = 800

So the width is 40.

3/8 (three eighths) x 6 =

(in simplest form)

3/8 taken 6 times is 18/8.

Simplified = 9/4 = 2 and 1/4

Two and one fourth

4.2 + 16.45 - 2.345 =

18.65 - 2.345 = 16.305

I am a triangle. Two of my angles measure 90 and 40 degrees. What is the measure of the 3rd angle?

50 degrees because all triangles have 3 angles that add up to 180 degrees.

3 meters = ____ centimeters = ____ millimeters

3 m = 300 cm = 3000 mm

We need a new rug in the classroom because people have spilled milk, glue and spaghetti sauce on it over the years. The width of the rug is 15 feet. The length of the rug is 44 feet. How many square feet of rug do we need to buy?

15 x 44 = 660 square feet

5 and 1/6 - 3 and 5/6 =

Five and 1/6 minus three and 5/6 =

(Sorry about the fractions. If I want them to really look like fractions, I have to pay this website $20... Not going to happen.)

Five and 1/6 = Four and 7/6

So... 4  7/6 - 3  5/6 = 1 and 2/6 or simplified

1 and 1/3

1.56 grams = ____ milligrams

1 g = 1000 mg and 2 g = 2000 mg so

1.56 grams = 1560 mg

We measured the perimeter of the school in meters. We found that it was 330 meters around.

A) If the width (the short side) is 50 meters, what's the length in meters?

B) What's the area in square meters?

330 - 50 (for one short side) and - 50 (for the other short side) = 230. Then we divide that by 2 because there are 2 long sides of the building. 230 divided by 2 = 115 meters for one side. (A)

(B) Length x Width = 115 x 50 = 5750 square meters

4/5 + 1/4 - 1/3

a) What is the common multiple for 5, 4 and 3?

b) Solve.

c) Can you simplify your final answer? Why or why not?

a) 5 and 4 have 20 in common. But with 3 we need to go all the way to 60.

b) 16/20 + 5/20 = 21/20 (= 63/60)

63/60 - 20/60 = 43/60

c) Nope. 43 and 60 don't have any common factors.

4.97 x 3.2 =

a) Estimate your answer by rounding before you multiply.

b) Solve.

a) 5 x 3 = 15

b) 15.904

I am a square based prism. The _perimeter_ of my square base equals 16 inches. If my volume is 48 cubic inches, what are my 3 dimensions? (Length, width and height)

4 x 4 x 3

because the square base is 4 on each side. You can add 4+4+4+4 around the base to get 16 for the perimeter.

Volume is LxWxH - so 4 x 4 x ___ = 48

5 meters = ___ kilometers

Write the answer as a fraction and a decimal.

There would be 1000 meter sticks lined up to make a kilometer. So, 5 of them would be 5 out of 1000 or 5/1000 km (or as a decimal 0.005)

Ali is measuring the dimensions (length, width and height) of her chicken tractor because she needs to buy chicken wire to go all the way around the perimeter and across the top. (The bottom (7ftx4ft) will be on the ground - no wire.) It's in the shape of a square based prism on its side. (See Ali's diagram.) The length is 7 feet. The width is 4 feet. The height is 4 feet.

A) How many square feet of chicken wire does she need to wrap around the sides?

B) And how much does she need to cover the top?

BONUS) You can wager up to 500 points and then Ali will tell you the bonus.

A) 7x4 = one side (28 sq feet) + 7x4 = other side + two ends (4x4) and (4x4).

28 + 28 +16 + 16 = 88 square feet

B) The top is 7x4 so 28 square feet.

C) Ask Ali.

We are making bread. It calls for 2 1/2 teaspoons of yeast per loaf, plus 1/2 c of warm water and 3/8 teaspoon of sugar (or molasses). This is before we add the flour/salt.

a) If we wanted to check to see if we have  enough yeast and sugar for 20 loaves, what's the minimum of each we'd need?

b) If we have 1 full jar of yeast and it holds 16 envelopes and each envelope of yeast is 2 1/2 teaspoons, will we have enough in that jar? Why?

 c) Each jar costs $5.89. How much does each serving (2 1/2 t) cost?

a) 50 teaspoons of yeast & 7 1/2 teaspoons of sugar

b) nope, We need 20 servings (2 1/2 t / loaf). We only have 16.

c) $5.89 divided by 16 = $0.37

Our class collected bread money ($5/loaf) for a year. But the cost of ingredients was $1.48/loaf. If we sold 45 loaves and then divided our profit by the number of kids in the class to help with the cost of the big trip, how much would each kid get toward their trip fee?

$5.00-$1.48 = $3.52 = profit per loaf

$3.52 x 45 = $158.40

$158.40 / 25 kids = $6.34 / kid

I am a square based pyramid. The dimensions of my square are 3 feet and 3 feet. (It's a square!) The height of one side of the pyramid is 6 feet.

a) What is the area of the base?

b) What is the area of one of the sides?

c) What is the total area of the whole pyramid?

a) Base = 3 x 3 = 9 square feet

b) Triangle = 3 x 6 (divided by 2 or take half of that) = 18 divided by 2 = 9 square feet

c) Total area = base (9 sq ft) + 4 triangles (9 sq ft x 4) = 9 (base) + (36 triangles) = 45 square feet
