A mixture
What is the best tool for measuring temperature?
Thermometer
If we combine 50 grams of water with 5 grams of sugar, what is the mass of the mixture before and after the sugar dissolves into the water?
Before: 55
After:55
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of a pure substance.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture in which one substance dissolves into another.
What is the best tool for measuring mass?
Balance (scale)
After building a bird house, Solana wants to seperate the metal from the wood shavings to properly dispose of them. What is one way she could separate the metal shavings from the wood pieces without sorting them by hand?
She could use a magnet.
Atoms can come together in a group and bond to form what?
Molecules
What is mass?
Mass is the measurement of the amount of matter
True or False: The mass of a solution equals the mass of the heaviest substance in the solution.
False
What tool would be best for measuring volume?
Graduated Cylinder
When separating trailmix, students sort the items based on their......?
Physical properties
In which state of matter do molecules have the LEAST energy?
Solid
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space a solid, liquid, or gas occupies.
True or False: When substances are combined to form a mixture that is not a solution a new substance is formed.
False
What units does the following scientific tools use:

Graduated cylinder- milliliters
After stirring sand and salt into water, Violet spills a little bit of the water off the top. When she separates out the sand and salt again, which will have a lower mass than she started with? Why?
The salt will have a lower mass because after stirring the sand and the salt, the sand would’ve all sunk to the bottom, but the salt would’ve dissolved evenly throughout the water forming a solution. When Violet spilled the water it had some salt in it so at the end of the experiment she would have less salt then she started with so the mass will be lower since there is not as much of it.
In which state of matter does molecules have the MOST energy?
Gas
True or False: Air is an example of matter, but sound is not.
True
Salt water is an example of a _________.

An inflated balloon measured against a deflated balloon shows that air has both ____ and _____.
Mass and volume
Two of your classmates are arguing. Student A believes lemonade can be classified as a solution and as a mixture, but Student B believes it can only be a classified as a solution. Who is right?
Student A is right because solutions are mixtures. All solutions are mixtures but not all mixtures are solutions.
___________ can cause molecules to speed up and slow down
Temperature
