What are the three properties of matter?

Solid, liquid, and gas.

Length is measured in.....

Meters

Does air have mass?

Yes

200

What two things must an object have to be considered matter?

Mass and volume

200

Physical or chemical change: wax melting.

Physical

When liquid water turns into water vapor, what is this change of state called?

Evaporation (vaporization)

The mass of a cup of orange juice is 124 g. After being frozen overnight what would the mass be when Mrs. Fry takes it out in the morning?

124 g

Explain why wood would make for a bad submarine.

Wood floats!

300

Name three examples of properties of matter that are observable.

Texture, odor, shape, color, sound, etc.

300

A student mixes two substances together and notices bubbles forming without heating the mixture. What does this indicate?

A chemical change

300

When water vapor cools and forms tiny liquid droplets on a cold window, what is this process called?

Condensation

A graduated cylinder has 40 mL of water. A rock is added and the water level rises to 58 mL. What is the volume of the rock?

18 mL

Mrs. Parr says that the particles in a solid are completly still. Is she right? Why or why not.

No, they are vibrating.

400

Name four properties of matter that are measureable.

Mass, weight, length, temperature, volume, density, etc.

400

Mrs. Swallow mixes together the ingredients for some chocolate chip cookies. While she is waiting for the oven to pre-heat she wonders what kind of change has occurred. Which is it?

Physical - until they are put into the oven.

400

Describe what happens to the particles of matter when liquid turns into a solid.

The particles lose energy and slow down.

A student is measuring a ribbon that is 2 meters long. How long is it in centimeters?

200 cm

400

A student combines sand and iron fillings. What tool could help seperate the two materials?

A magnet

What is the special name for something that has some properties of a liquid and some properties of a solid depending on how much pressure is applied? Think about the oobleck.

A non-Newtonian fluid

Before mixing baking soda and vinegar together in a beaker a student measures the total mass to be 64 grams. After the reaction the mass in the beaker is only 48 grams. Was matter destroyed? If not, what happened to the rest?

No. A gas was formed and escaped into the air. Some liquid could also have spilled out of the beaker.

500

What is the temperature for each of the following:

Freezing point

Boiling point

Melting point

Freezing point- 0 degrees Celcius

Boiling point- 0 degrees Celsius

Melting point- 0 degrees Celsius

Name the four tools used to measure matter AND what unit we use for each of them in science.

Graduated cylinder - mL

Balance scale - g

Meter stick - m

Thermometer - C

Two students want to figure out if water temperature affects how fast sugar dissolves. Student A puts one spoonful into small cup of cold water and student B puts one spoonful into a pot of hot water and stirs it. Their results show that the sugar dissolved faster in the hot water. Can they safely say that the temperature was the reason? How could they improve their experiment?

No! They would need to use the same about of water for both hot and cold water. They would also need to not stir either one.
