100

Everything that has mass and takes up space

Matter

100
Which tool would you use to measure the mass of an object?
Balance scale
100

This results in a new substance and is permanently changed

Chemical change

100

Materials that can be easily separated and keep their own properties

Mixture

100
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
200

The state of matter that has a definite shape and volume and has particles that are tightly packed together

Solid

200

Milliliters and cubic centimeters both measure this.

Volume

200

Which change occurs when you put ice cream in a blender?

Physical change

200

A box of cereal is an example of this.

Mixture

200
Atoms of only one type is called ______________
an element
300

The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of the element

Atom

300
What tool would you use to measure the volume of a marble?
Graduated Cylinder
300

Which change occurs when you bake cookies?

Chemical change

300

A drink mix being stirred completely into water is an example of this.

Solution

300

Name 3 properties of matter that can be observed

state, size, shape, color, texture, scent, magnetism, hardness, and solubility

400

Amount of matter packed inside a certain amount of space

Density

400
How do you measure the volume of a solid? Can you use the same method to measure all solids? Why or why not.
To measure the volume of a rectangular solid, you can multiply length x height x width. To measure the volume of an irregular solid you have to use water displacement. Measure a certain amount of water in a graduated cylinder. Then, put the object in the water and record the new volume. Last, subtract the first amount from the second amount to find the volume of the irregular solid.
400

Name 2 signs that prove a chemical change has occurred

burning, gas forms, smell/odor, color change, change in temperature

400

Name one thing that makes matter dissolve faster?

smaller size, higher temperature, stirring

400
All matter is made up of _________.
atoms
500

The action of one substance evenly blending onto another. The particles become too small to see.

Dissolve

500

If a beach ball floats and a baseball sinks, which one has a higher density?

Baseball

500

Which change occurs when an ice cube melts into liquid water?

Physical change because it's still H2O!

500

What is a key difference between mixtures and solutions?

A mixture is not evenly mixed and a solution is evenly mixed.

500
What should you use to separate small iron fillings from a pile of sand?
A magnet for attracting the iron filings and leaving the sand behind
