What are attractive forces?
Attractive forces are forces that pull something near, or attract something. Attractive forces exist between particles, attracting them toward each other. The stronger the force of attraction, the closer together the particles will be.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What are particles?
The smallest unit of matter.
What is volume?
Volume is the amount of space a solid, liquid, or gas takes up.
We can measure the volume of liquids using a graduated cylinder. The SI units of volume include litres (L) and millilitres (mL).
Why are attractive forces important?
Attractive forces are important because without them, particles would not be held together and condensed states of matter such as solids and liquids would not exist.
What is a solid?
A state of matter which is firm and has a fixed shape.
What is the particle model of matter?
The particle model of matter is a way of explaining the arrangement and movement of particles in something. It says that all matter is made of particles, that particles are always moving, and that particles have spaces between them.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in a solid, liquid, or gas.
What is density?
A comparison of the mass of a solid, liquid, or gas to its volume.
Name 1 example of a solid, liquid and a gas.
Answers may vary
What is a gas?
A state of matter that has no fixed shape or volume.
What do the particles in solids do?
Solid – particles are close together and vibrating in place.
What are the physical properties of matter? Name all 5!
The physical properties of matter are characteristics that can be observed or measured. They include state, mass, volume, density, and compressibility.
How can you measure density of liquids?
We can compare densities of liquids by watching whether a liquid sinks or floats when added to another liquid.
Explain- why are mass and weight different?
Mass is the amount of matter, and weight is the measurement of how gravity is acting on the mass.
What is a liquid?
A state of matter which flows freely, but has constant volume.
Liquid – particles are further apart than the particles in solids. They are separated by spaces and can slide past each other. They are moving more than those in a solid but less than those in a gas.
How can we measure mass?
To measure the mass of solids and liquids you can use a balance scale.
What is compressibility?
Compressibility is the ability of a liquid or gas to reduce in volume when under pressure.
What would happen to your mass on the moon?
Your mass would stay the same!
In a liquid- what is the meniscus and how do we use it to measure?
The meniscus is the curve of a liquid. To measure-Find the low point of the curve and measure from here.
What do the particles in a gas do?
Gas – particles are very far apart. They are constantly moving in all directions.
What are the SI units for mass?
The SI units of mass include grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
What does SI measurement mean?
Standard International Units
A system of measurement that is used around the world.
