What can be observed or measured without changing an object?
100
chemical property
What describes the ability of a substance to react with other materials and form new substances?
100
The ability of a match to light when struck.
What is a chemical property?
100
gasoline
What floats on water?

MAny are suspensions and colliods. Unlike other liquids, particles in these mixtures can settle and not be uniformly distributed. Mixing or shaking distributes the particles evenly.
Why do many juices, medicines, and paints have direction to shake or stir well befor using?
200
combustibility
What is the ability of a substance to burn?
200
texture
What is an observable property; how the surface of a substance feels?
200
Hydrogen gas
What rises in air?
200
sugar
What sinks in water?
200
What would a mixture of three substances be like? Explain how it can be completely separated.
The substances would not react chemically. The mixture can be separated many ways including evaporation, boiling, filtration, sifting, megnetic properties, dissolving parts in water, sorting, centrifugation, and chemical reactions.
300
density
What is the amount of mass in a given volume?
300
ductility
What is the ability of a substance to be pulled into thin threads without breaking?
300
combustion reaction
What is a camfire an example of?

helps prevent chemical changes
What does paint on a metal surface do?

Identify the physical and chemical change AND properties in each of the following sentences. 1.) A lump of silver is heated until it melts. 2.) It is then mixed with copper and poured into a mold. 3.) After the metal is cooled, a shiny spoon is removed from the mold. 4.) The spoon is exposed to the air for a long period of time and it tarnishes turning dark gray.
1. When it melts, silver goes through a physical change. It's melting temperature is a property. 2. When silver is mixed with copper, it forms a mixture (physical change). A change in shape (physical change) takes place when the mixture is poured into the mold. 3. When the silver mixture cools, it solidifies (physical change). Shininess - physical property. 4. When the silver tarnishes, a chemical change takes place. The dark-gray is a physical property.
400
suspension
What is a mixture that contains particles that are large enough to be seen and can be separated from the mixture using filter paper?
400
stability
What is the condition where a substance does not go through a chemical change easily?
400
A substance breaks down into simpler substances
What happens during a decomposition reaction?
400
the physical and chemical properties of a substance
What affects how substances in a mixture separate?
400
A statue has been in the same location for 100 years and has been eroded gradually by the wind and rain. During the last 10 years, however, the damage seems to have become greater. Explain this.
The gradual erosion by the weather over the last century has been a phisical change, but recenlty pollution in the air and rain may have caused chemical changes to the statue.
500
colliod
What is a suspension that isn't easily separated, beccause of the small size of the particles?
500
solution
What is a mixture in which the particles of each substance are mixed evenly?
500
solvent
What is the water in a solution of sugar/salt/etc. and water?
500
The smoke from the fireworks is a colliod.
What is the reason lasers can be seen at a laser-and-fireworks show?
500
What is the best grade (percent) one can get on a test if there are 100 points total and then 3 bonus questions worth 5 points each?
115%
