THE BEATITUDES — Who are the Blessed?
Jesus says these people are blessed because theirs is the kingdom of heaven — they are the first group named in the Beatitudes.
Who are the poor in spirit?
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are promised this will happen to them.
What is "they will be filled"?
Jesus uses this substance to describe his disciples in verse 13.
What is salt?
Jesus went up on this feature of the landscape before sitting down to teach.
What is a mountainside?
God promised that it would be through this nation that his Kingdom would be restored over all the world.
What is Israel?
Blessed are these people, for they will be comforted.
Who are those who mourn?
The pure in heart are promised they will do this.
What is "they will see God"?
Jesus calls his disciples this in verse 14 — a phrase still commonly used today.
What is the light of the world?
When Jesus sat down on the mountainside, these people came to him.
Who are his disciples?
The video says 'a city on a hill' referred to this city, where God's light shone from the temple.
What is Jerusalem?
These people are blessed, and Jesus says they will inherit the earth.
Who are the meek?
Those persecuted because of righteousness are promised this — the same promise given to the poor in spirit.
What is "the kingdom of heaven"?
Jesus says if a mineral loses this quality, it is no longer good for anything.
What is its saltiness?
In verse 12, Jesus references these people from Israel's past who were persecuted in the same way.
Who are the prophets?
According to the video, Jesus' revolution would be characterized by generosity, forgiveness, and this.
What is justice?
Blessed are these people, for they will be shown mercy.
Who are the merciful?
When people insult you and persecute you falsely on Jesus' account, He says to do these two things.
