In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us not to be like the Pharisees, the tax collectors, the hypocrites, and the heathen. In what way(s) should we not be like each of them?
Pharisees: our righteousness needs to exceed theirs by following the Law in our hearts, and not only its outward action. Tax collectors: love our enemies and not just those who love us. Hypocrites: we shouldn't do good deeds, pray, and fast to show off in public. Heathen: we shouldn't think that God will listen to our prayers if we use many words. (5:20; 5:46; 6:2,5,16; 6:7)
(5:20; 5:46; 6:2,5,16; 6:7)
